SHARPSHOOTERS GET BUSY. LIGHTNING CONDUCTOR, HECTOR, LADY JOCE-LYN AND WHIPPOORWTLL SCORE. Not a Favorite Wins at Louisville Five of the Ten Starters in the Steeplechase . Fail to Finish Gossip. Louisville, Ky., October 12. Favorites were downed in all the races at Churchill Downs today, but the bookmakers did not lay up anything. The sharpshooters were much In evidence. They hit the books heavily over the victories of Lightning Conductor, Hector, Lady Jocclyn and Whlppoorwill. The sport was interesting. The finishes were of the close order and even losers at times felt a thrill of excitement. The steeplechase was replete with mishaps. At the list jump St. Volma went down. Of the ten starting only .five covered the course safely. Lady Jocelyn, the winner, ran a race some--tiling near to the form that had ben expected of .her probably through the superior judgment of Archibald, who piloted her. When Gus Lanka went down at the third jump he rolled over YourelL The boy however, got up, shook himself and walked to the paddock. Pierce, who rode St. Volma, was pretty badly shaken up. He was bruised about the face and chest but was not seriously hurt. There was much jamming in the Hector race shortly after the start. C. Morris, on Retropaw, was held most to blame and was suspended for the remainder of the meeting.
