FAR WEST, KING OF THE MUDLARKS. Commenting upon the performance of Far West at Belmont Park Wednesday the New York World says: "Far West clinched his claim to King of the Mudlarks. Over the heavy track at Belmont Park he ran the mile course, around two turns, in l:38g. This was a marvellous performance, as the track-record made by Kiamesha when the course was dry, is 1:37J. When the time of the fourth race, was hung out racegoers were, astounded and turning to one another said: There must be some mistake. Surely Far West never ran that fast over such a heavy track. A canvass of the trainers who timed the race independently of W. H. Barretto, the official timer, fixed the time hung out as correct. One or two horsemen said that they timed the race a fraction of a second better. The track was so deep in mud that eight out of the original twelve entries were withdrawn early in the day."";
