BERGENS FINES WERE HEAVY. "It is understood that the Jockey Club stewards will pay all expenses of Marty Bergens funeral," says the New York World. "This action will amend in small part for the many fines that Bergen had paid into the fund for disabled jockeys. During the many years he rode, Marty was at war with James F. Caldwell, who years ago, was the starter at all the local race tracks. During this period he paid to the various racing associations the aggregate sum of 10,000. A fifteenth part of that amount would more than pay the expenses of his fuueral and keep his widow for a few mouths until she has time to make arrangements for permanent support."
