JOCKEY SEWELL DIES FROM HIS FALL. Crack Rider Proves to Have Sustained Fatal In-ternal Injuries When Lichtmess Went Down. New York, November 10. Jockey Laverne Sewell, one of the best race riders on the American turf, who signalized his eighteenth birthday by riding Rams Horn to a brilliant victory in the Brighton Handicap last July, died late last night in the home lie had recently purchased for his mother at Sheepshead Bay, death coming from injuries sustained by being heavily thrown to the ground when his mount, Lichtmess, fell in the last race yesterday. While ut the track the boy bore up bravely and declared repeatedly that he was all right. He " rode home with Fred Burlew and ex-jockey Frank ONeill In the formers automobile and on the way was taken with such a severe fainting spell that lie was -with difficulty revived. Medical aid was quickly summoned and the doctors did their best for the suffering lad, but to no avail and he passed away In great agony just before midnight. The cause of Sewells death, was later diagnosed as a rupture of the kidneys arid bleeding internally. The news of Sewells death was a great shock to racegoers. Very few of yesterdays spectators at the track were cognizant even of his fall on Lichtmess and to everybody interested. Including the newspaper men, the assurance was forthcoming ut the track that lie was all right. Sewells untimely death Is deplorable and emphasizes the fact that the jockeys calling is beset with deadly peril. The lad ranked among the best young riders -of the time and, from the day. when he first came , into notice at Hot Springs, Ark., early in 1005, he steadily advanced in his profession, his riding at New Orleans last winter being especially noticeable and brilliant. In the east this year lie held - his own with the best exponents of track horsemanship. His record for his two years in the saddle-is as follows: -Year. Mts. 1st. 2d. 3d.
