; 1 1 , i CORRIGAN WINS THE OPENING HANDICAP. Oaklands Resumption of Racing Marked by a Great Attendance Fino Weather and Good Spoit. San Francisco, Cal., Nbvcmlwr 17. The tradi- tlonal devotion of Californians to thoroughbred racing and their enthusiastic adherence- to this, the grandest of all sports, was never more forcibly illustrated than at todays inaugural of the New California Jockey Clubs winter season of 1000-07. The attendance, conservatively estimated at 15,000 surpassed all previous records for an opening day. President Williams expressed himself as being surprised and delighted almost beyond expression. He has ; been confident all along that his efforts to restore racing in San Francisco would "meet with a full measure of success, but was not prepared for todays extraordinary outpouring of spectators. The Opening Handicap, a mile dasli with ,000 added, furnished a splendid contest. A big field of ten horses faced the starter. Corrlgan, one of the extreme outsiders, at 25 to 1, drew outright at the end and won an exciting race from Logistllla, the heavily backed favorite. Hildreths Burleigh was applauded when he won the opening race of. the season . at; six. furlongs, and the public, accepting it as a good omen, supported Logistllla. heavily in the handicap, which accounts for the unusually short odds laid against her by the ring, J. Daly, rider of Hector, was suspended for ten days for cutting across in front in the last race. J. Hunter, the colored rider, was also disciplined for rough work in the first race..
