HARD RAIN AND MUDDY TRACK AT OAKLAND. Judges Order that Van Ness Be Returned to S. C. Hildreth Thirty-Four Books On. Oakland. Cal., November 2S. The rainy season hereabouts, with an unusual cold snap accompanying, was ushered in today. The precipitation began at one oclock this afternoon and continued until evening. The Oakland track was quickly converted into a shallow, muddy canal. Few of the entries were scratched, however, and average good racing resulted. First and second choices monopolized the card, with the solitary exception of the fifth race where the luckless horse Military Man, at prohibitive odds, ran third to a couple of long shots Prestige and Dorado. At todays "cut-in" thirty-four bookmakers were assigned positions in the betting ring. The horse Van Ness, claimed out of the second race last Monday, has been ordered returned to his former owner, S. C. Hildreth as a result of the hitters protest that Libervale, the entry of Berger and Co., the claimants, was not properly registered. Brussel, the rider of Dorado in the fifth race, was fined 5 for cutting across horses in" the stretch. Hildebrand fainted yesterday because of too much reducing. II. R. Meyer and Joe Magee are the latest arrivals from the east.
