MEDDLER THE PREMIER STALLION. History of the Great Sire and 1906 Record of His Performers on the Turf. Meddler, now in the stud of Clarence H. Ifackaj i at Kingston Farm, near Lexington, Ky.. has for the seen I time earned the title Premier Stallion in America. He Brat headed the list in 1904. The following rear be ranked third to Hamburg and Melton, the latter, though not standing in this country, gaining the second ran; through the nehlerements of the great Bysonby. Last rear meddler was represented by thirty-fire starters, of which twenty-one were wlnnera of gfty-four races. Ten of his representatives were implac-d in all Of their starts but the others earned an aggregate of 1151,243. Meddler is now seventeen years old. He was bred by the late ;. A. Baird Squire Abington | i in England in 1880. Be is a bay horse by St. Gotten- Busybody, by Petrarch. As a two-year-eld he carried the colors Of Mr. Baird in three races in Ui -land and was unbeaten. He won the British Dominion Two-Tear Hd Stakes, the Chesterfield Stakes, and the Dewhurst Plate. Meddler could not meet his three year-old engagements, they being null and void under the rules of racing. The establishment of the late Mr. Baird was Mid by auction at Newmarket. June 20. ISO.!, and Meddler became the property of Mr. W. II. Forl.es for 2,500 and was brought at once to America. The boras waa perfectly sound in every refpe n and his appearance on the turf in this essmbry was anxiously anticipated. Mr. Forbes, however, decided not to hae him put in training again and Meddler began his duaies as a stallion in the Neponset Stud, near Boston in the spring of ISM. After the death of Mr. Forbes. William C. Whitney sought Meddler for 848,008 at the lis- i penal sale of the Neponael Stud and he was i bransfi rred to the La Belle stud in Kentucky, where ho had the advantage of a better band of brood- , mares than were represented in the Foil.es collection. English breeders sent commissioners to buy Meddler at the Forbes sale, but the highest of these was 848,000 and Mr. Whitneys bid exceeded them to the profit of tie American turf. Meddler was knocked down to the bid of Mathew Corbet t for 951,000. For several weeks there was much discussion as to the name of the real pur- f chaser, for it was known at the time that Mr. Cm hell was acting as an agent.
