NOTES OF THE TURF. William Murray, who is now at Butte, has been asked to do the starting at the Norfolk meeting, which is to open August 22. Bayonet has been schooling brilliantly lately and much is expected of him in the steeplecaslng at the autumn meetings In the east. Jockey Englander is no longer with the nayman-McCarren stable. He will do much of the riding for Frank E. Brown for the remainder of the season. Steeplechase jockey Harvey Boyle, who was warned away from Fort Erie, showed up at Sara , 1 toga last Friday and was denied admittance to the racecourse. Jockey J. W. Harshbergcr was recently married at New Orleans to Miss Evelyn Smith, daughter of Mrs. n. W. Valentine, who owns Invincible and several other horses racing at the half-mile track at the Crescent City. Kern, the six-year-old bay horse by Once Again Majel, was killed last week at Earllngton, Ky. He fell in a race at the fair which was being held at that place. Kern was the proprety of R. B. Bradley, of Nashville, Tcnn. It is claimed that the merciless manner In which Jack .Martin flogged Almee C. In the race for the Spinaway Stakes, caused Frank J. Farrell to Instruct trainer Weir that the" lightweight, Beckman, under contract to the stable, he given mounts in preference to Martin.
