ST. JEANNE ONLY WINNING FAVORITE. G. Swain Fined and Suspended for Rough Riding V. Powers Circus Stunt. Buffalo, N. Y., August 21. Despite the fact that St. Jeanne was the only decided favorite to win at Fort Erie, It is doubtful if the books laid up anything on this afternoons transactions, as all tlie winners were heavily supported. The first race furnished the best contest of the day, the finish resulting in a hard drive lietween Edgely and Rather Royal, in which the former was victor by tlie smallest of margins. In all the other races tlie winners had plenty to spare at the end. There was some rough riding during the afternoon in which jockey G. Swain played a star part. In the lirst race he cut off Toddles soon after the start and sent the latter to lier knees. For this he was fined 5. In the third race just as the barrier was sprung Swain rushed Laniptrimmer adross to the inside, causing a Jiasty jam. In the mixup V. Powers, who had the mount on Charley Ward, was bounced off his horse on to the back of Tagane, but in some miraculous manner he scrambled back into Charley Wards saddle again. It was as great a piece of circus riding as was ever witnessed on a race track. Both Tagane and Charley Ward were as good as left at the post, and the remarkable race that Tagane ran showed clearly that she would certainly have been a dangerous contender witli an equal start. Swain was this time fined .0, and as an additional punishment was suspended for five days. The Goldhlatt stable furnished two of the defeated favorites in Toddles and Stylit. The formers defeat was in a measure due to the Interference which she suffered in the early stages. Toddles, however, was on her had behavior at the post and tlie assistant starter found it necessary to remove tlie blinkers to get her to break.
