EOSEBEN WINS THE FLIGHT. "THE BIG TRAIN" RACES IN HIS OLD COMMANDING WAY. Runs the Muddy Seven Furlongs In 1:25 3-5 Miss Crawford Takes the Russet Handicap Only Two Favorites Score. New York, September 12. The Sheepshead Bay track was heavy and rough today yet 15,000 people were out to see the races. The Flight Stakes and Russet Ilaudleap were the stake features. Each furnished a good race with small lields. Boseben won the Flight in heavy going last year. He made it a double today, but cut three-fifths of a second off his 1000 time, running in a commanding way. He was favorite, but at an astonishingly good price. His race last Tuesday was not a good one, and "The Big Train" was under suspicion. The Kusset Handicap fell lo Miss Crawford, which was well hacked here and elsewhere. Master Dngan rode her well, and she just got up iu time to beat Nealon. which was added at the last moment and ran a grand race. Miss Crawford made a new record for the distance on the turf. Only two favorites, .Tim Gaffney and Boseben, were first. Tlie opening jumping race resulted in an upset. Garretts most recent running had not been suggestive of winning here, and lie was an outsider iu the betting, but, going right out in front, never gave the others a chance and won all the way witii surprising ease, the two favorites, Essex: II. and Jimmy Lane, finishing second and third. Wholesale withdrawals cut the second race down from seventeen announce dentires to three starters, with the crack mud runner, Jim Gaffney, an overwhelming favorite, lie led all the way by a wide margin and won pulled up from Puuky and Jane Swift. Between the last two there was a lot of place betting, witli Jane Swift a hot favorite over lunky, but she iuit all over after going fairly well for a half mile. Ten scratches reduced the third race to a field of eight starters, with Clare Bussell a well-supported, favorite, but the Schreiber cast-off. Chief Hayes, proved the winuer in a well-contested drive through the stretch. Ingham, evidently favored by the going, seemed likely to win at one time, but finally brought up second, with the favorite a good third. The Cella three-year-old had some backing, but was never conspicuous. He is likely to do better later on. Clare Bussell works well but races disappointingly. For the Flight Stakes but five went to the post. Bosebens last race, although won, left an impression that "The Big Train" was not at his best, and the result was a remarkably good price against liim. substantial support being awarded Far West. Keator and Chapultepec. But Boseben vanquished bis opposition in quite his old invincible fashion, and ran a remarkably fast race in view of the condition of the track. Under Millers guidance Far West ran a fast and game race, and beat Keator oil for second place. Chapultepec was Bosebens closest pursuer to the stretch, then gave way and finished far back. . Keator ran -well enougli to suggest an early win in his own class. Oxford. Cartilage and the Whitney pair, Killaloo and Littleton Maid, were scratched from the Busset Handicap and the Suburban winner Nealon was an added starter. Beacon Bight was a heavily backed favorite, but at the end of a rousing struggle through the stretch, the other western representative, .Miss Crawford; got up in the last two strides mid snatched the race away from Nealon. Tlu latter ran a grand race at the weights and it required the setting of a new record over the grass course to deprive him of victory. Beacon Light was a resolute and close up third and fully sustained Ills reputation of being a good racehorse. Lancastrian was overmatched here, but ran a distinctly good race. Sixteen out of twenty two-year-olds, guiltless of fcver having won a race, went to the post in the sixth and Electioneer half-brother Goldquest, won out by a short head from George Longs Milford. the two having the result between them all the way and beating the others oft". The seventh race was also an affair for maiden two-year-olds and after being reputed speedy enough since last spring to win a race. Sungleam fiualiy made good and, not only won, but did it so decisively as to finish off by herself six lengths in front of Oritiamb, with Baurida beaten but a head for second place.
