Then came tin equally easy victory in "the New Stakes at Ascot, 5 to 1 being laid on him, the official verdict being six lengths. In the Champagne Stakes, at Don-caster, his opponents being My Pet II., Bezonlan, Linacre, Candahar, Roekbonrne and Weathercock. 4 to 1 was betted on him, and again he won in a canter two lengths in front of My Pet II. Then came his first defeat. Galvani beating him by half a length in the Middle Pari; Plate, but In extenuation of this defeat was the fact that the colt had been suffering severely from dental troubles, and It was confidently asserted that this form would be reversed when the horses met again, and he was favorite for the Derby through the winter. He started off this season with a victory in the Craven Stakes at Newmarket, which, carrying 132 pounds, he won In a canter by six lengths from Stron Ard, with Linacre and Olympian as his next nearest attendants. Then came success In the first of the classic races, the Two Thousand Guineas, Bezonian being three lengths behind him. Disap polntment, however, awaited his owner in the Derby. In -which Slieve Gallion, with odds of 13 to 5 laid on him, showed a lack of staying power, anel could only finish third to Orby and Woolwlnder. His last appearance was at Ascot, when, in the St. James Palace Stakes, with 20 to 1 laid on him, he cantered in front of his two opponents, Lycaeus and Spiridion.
