PROTESTS AGAINST CELLAS WIN. Stevens Alleges That Miss Stromes Owner Is Bookmakincj. Cincinnati, O., September 27. J. I. Stevens, trainer of Beatrice K., made formal protest to the judges against the payment of the purse won by Miss Strome. alleging that L. A. Cella, her owner. Is interested in several books being operated here and therefore under the Racing Commissions recently enacted rule Is ineligible from racing horses at the track. The judges will investigate the mattej. Stevens claims specifically that the Del-mar and Louisville Clubs are being operated with Cella capital. There were several incidents this afternoon that furnished additional excitement to the sport. In the steeplechase over the short course, the erratic-acting Carolyn, ridden by timid Higgins, fell while negotiating the third obstacle, broke her leg and had to be destroyed. W. K. Slade, on which "Bill" McGuIgan tried to make a killing surreptitiously at Oaklawn last winter while lie was posing as a reformer and inciting a crusade against racing in Arkansas, won the chase, but to do so had to be much the best, as Wickline almost fell off while negotiating the stretch hurdle. Gering, the horses present owner, secured him out of a selling race by the claiming route after he had been soundly beaten. What appealed to his present owner was a fast trial he bad shown at Essex Park while owned by J. R. Hand. McGuigan. who lives within a stones throw of Essex Park, also witnessed the trial, hence his willingness to deplete the hook-makers coffers. Colloquys fast first half in her race enabled her to get so far in the lead that it was only necessary for her. to canter the last quarter to win in a big romp. Mike Suttons showing was so poor as to call forth adverse comment. In the three-quarters sprint. True Wing and Deutsehland, the latter out after a long rest, delayed .the start by their fractious antics. True Wing was almost left, but closed up a big gap, although failing to land inside the money, the purse going to Lady Esther, Deutsehland taking the place from Convolo. Lycurgus, on Funiculalre, deliberately sat and watched the others in th" field get fully a furlong in front before lie made an effort to send his mount along. The judges gave him a sharp warning for his listlessness. 1 The Sehrciber stable uncovered another good thing, this time in Centre Shot. a. Woodlands product, which made a show of a field of maidens in the second race. Charlatan, In the closing race, burned np a lot of money for favorite backers when he propped at the barriers rise and was left. Trainer W. Phillips was among todays arrivals, being en route from New York to Louisville, where he goes to gather the remnants of Fred Cooks band of yearlings for shipment to Nashville, where they will be wintered and broken. Phillips stated the horses now in the east would be -kept there until the end of the season. E. S. Whittaker, considered the best two-year-ohl in the stable, has teen sick and will be turned out until next year. The starter, in the steeplechase, fined II. Higgins 00 and Pollack 0 for disobedience at the post. Crimniins was suspended for six days in the second race for a similar offense.
