KINGS DAUGHTERS SPEED i of h T. C. MDOWELLS GOOD MARE WINS THE CULVER AT GRAVESEND. I 1 Crack Eastern Racers Are Behind Her in a i Fast Race James B. Brady the Soli- j tary Winning Favorite. - New York, September 27. The cold spell ushered in Wednesday morning still continued, and lowering , skies with probable rain affected the attendance at Gravescnd this afternoon. The track was fast. The excellent card developed good racing, iiothwithstand-ing that public favorites fared badly. Only one, .Tames It. Brady, at a prohibitive price, in the opening event, rewarded his backers. The solitary stake fixture on the program, the Culver 1 Handicap, was captured by the Ions overdue Kings 3 Daughter, with Nieol no. As good as 10 to 1 1 could be had about her at some stages of the 1 betting. In the actual racing the four-year-old ! Ornament mare never gave her supporters a mo- 3 nients uneasiness. The market was panicky on the 1 favorite, .T. It. Keenes Suffrage. It indicated a "waning confidence on the part of the public in 1he Keene stable, due to Veils poor showing the day before. Suffrage, carrying top weight, was handicapped by a long delay at the post, hut this did not affect, her as seriously as Millers lack of alertness at the start, which enabled several of her less fleet opponents to surround and impede her strides in the early running. Thomas C. McDowell lias not been favored by fortune in his eastern racing .so far tills year, hut tills afternoon his speedy young mare. Kings Daughter, ably ridden by Nicol, made amends for previous failures by placing, the Culver Handicap to his credit at the end of a fast run race. She got off well and, holding her pride of place gamely, won all the way and scored in record time, equalling the mark set by Endurance by Right in September, 31101. But Suffrage was the real heroine of the race, for, carrying 12S pounds to 110 on Kings Daughter, .she was only beaten a length, and from this performance must how be accredited with being at her best. lirookdale Nymph also ran a line race at a distance that does not show her at her best. Sewell practically had no chance at the start and showed tremendous speed in making up so much ground as to llnish a close up fourth. The tabled history of the Culver Handicap is as follows: Year. Brady proved best In the opening race, n six furlongs sprint contested by a hand of mediocre two-year-olds. He was a heavily hacked favorite and justified the preference awarded him bv leading throughout under Millers hurry-up guidance. Outsiders in Bcanlall and Blue Heron were second and third. Sanguine, a fast horse at times, made a sorry showing. McCarthy, who rode him, was a hindrance to the colt. A handicap at a mile and a half that was the second item on tin? card, produced a well contested and interesting race and a complete upset lor the favorites, Yankee Girl and Miss Crawford. Welbourne, not heretofore ranked as a stayer, went Into the lead at once and stayed there in a game and fast effort, but only won by a narrow margin from the promising Meddler filly Perseverance. Yankee Girl ran well and was a bang-up third, but Miss Crawford by no moans ran the race reasonably to be expected from a mare that had only recently defeated such a celebrity as Noalon. IiOrd Lovat was purchased from R. H. McC. Totter today at private sale by Ed Ileffner. C. 11. Ellison will ship only a few of his inferior class racers to Memphis next Saturday. Shot Gun was sold yesterday to J. P. Mnvberry lor ,C00. W. 15. .lennigs, his owner, had intended to use him as a stuck horse, but abandoned that idea when he again bled in his last race. A Mr. Braun of Philadelphia, who owned a half interest in the Artillery horse, did not want Shot Gun raced any more and with Jennings and May-lierrys consent, got the old sprinter back and then presented him to the Jockey Club Breeding Bureau. J. J. Ferguson and R. Buxton, owner and trainer respectively of the California Flour de Lis Stable, have come to Xew York for the purpose of buying several ready-made racers for campaigning at Oakland next winter. Jockey M. Buxton is under contract to this stable. Golf Ball Is taking walking exercise. His injury is too serious, however, to permit of his being raced in California as has been intended. Every sturter in todays first race was equipped with the rogues badge, blinkers: . Smiling Tom, which. In his preceding race was favorite over stake horses in the rich Hindoo Stakes, was beaten offin the last, a selling race. As was befitting a half-brother of Dick Welles, Security accounted for the third race in a close fight with Preen and Lotus, both of which would probably have beaten him with a bit further to go. A feature of this race was the speed shown by the Texas gelding. Toy Boy, he appearing a probable winner until in the final furlong. There is no end to R. F. Carmans good fortune, and a race or two falls to him nearly every day. Tills afternoon it was Acrobats turn to deliver and he defeated the favorite, Teinaceo, quite as if he was the best horse, a conclusion not borne out by their respective careers. Wes ran well, hut Smiling Tom was a disappointment. Live Wire, a useful two-year-old. took the western filly. Chulita, into camp In the last race, despite Miller being on her and giving her a good ride. The real feature of the race was the had showing of the favorite. Rialto, In running last. Thomas McCreery has shipped the Johnson horses hack to Belmont Park. With Lady Winifred and Aeronaut went the yearlings, the ,100 Hamburg Trigger lilly and the 1.100 Thmastar colt being the pets of the stable. Lady Winifred will be given another resting up, as she does not appear to be right. As for Aeronaut, trainer McCreery lias come to believe he is about hopeless.
