JOCKEY MAHER SOON .TO RETIRE. Unless Danny Slaher changes his mind this will be his last season In the saddle. He is worth three or four hundred thousand dollars, has a fine country place, and is getting to, the point of life where to keep to weight means hard work-and real privation. The talk about Dannys becoming an Englishman is wide of the fact. He rides in England because, he can make more money at the weight he can make about 120 pounds but when he retires will spend most of his time about New York and bis old home in Hartford. All stories to the contrary Maher is still heart whole and fancy free, and declares If he marries at all it will probably be to some nice Connecticut girl. Maher Is still second among the jockeys in England in the number of winning mounts to date, but the leader In percentage, while Lucien Lyne, who is doing but little riding, is twentieth in the list. The table below shows the English riding figures up lo September 30. Mahers percentage Is 25.31, AV. Uiggs, 20.11. Jockeys. Mts.AAius. Jockeys. Mts.AVius.
