MINOR STAKES AT BELMONT. ROSIMIRO AND BROOKDALE NYMPH WIN HURRICANA AND BRONX. Masquerade Adds Another Purse to the Keene Total She and Beauclere the Only Favorites to Win. New York, October 0. Tlie weather today was delightful witli just a tinge of autumn sharpness in the air. The excellent program attracted a goodly crowd to the magnificent Belmont course. The clubhouse inclosure contained a larger representation of the smart set than it has hold ou any afternoon during the present meeting, with a possible exception of the opening day. Of the two stakes down for decision, the Bronx IlighwcighV Handicap and the Ilurrieana Selling Stakes, the former was easily the feature. ISrookdale Xyiuph emphasized the present winning form of the "Whitney establishment by winning litis stake all the way, displaying quite unexpectedly her brilliant speed of former seasons, which combined with her stamina, enabled the fast inare to dispose of her opponents. The winner was accorded heavy support throughout the, betting at the average odds of 5 to 1. Jack Atkin, the steadily receding favorite, which finished a belated second, was the victim of a ride that evoked wondering comment from the spectators. A very moderate lot of two-year-olds were engaged in the Ilurrieana Stakes at live furlongs. Kosimiro broke out of the maiden ranks by scoring somewhat easily at S to 1 over eleven others. Jane Swift was a receding favorite in the betting that was lost in the sliullle in the actual contest. Knhaneed interest centered in Masquerades victory in the second race. She seemed a certainty on her last race, but has been none too consistent. But she won here like a good filly. The fourth race, at a mile for two-year-olds and upward, was really the most attractive race on the card. A number of speedy two-year-olds were pitted against older horses, and the winner turned up in the 10 to 1 choice, Number One, which lias all along displayed unmistakable characteristics of a stayer. Waiting tactics proved disastrous with Nimbus, which was beaten off. Tbe long over-due Beauclere won the long-distance affair that wound up the afternoons sport. lie was a stanchly hacked favorite, and never gave his backers a moments uneasiness. Don Enrique has mended his ways materially since Mr. Belmont sold him, and is now a fast and consistent race horse. Cressina and Prince Hamburg were well supported favorites in the first race, but neither had anything to do. with the finish, Don Enrique scoring easily in fast time from the lightly-weighted outsider, Zienap. Dolly Spanker ran a good race here and is evidently in form to win more than once in the fall campaign. Cros-sina quit and ran far below ids real form. Masquerades good race behind Stamina in the fillies half of the Matron Stakes sulliced to make her an odds-on favorite for the dash for two-year-old fillies that was the second item on the card. She took care of Marbles conclusively in the stretch, and the latter finished far in front of Adriuche for second money. But for being pocketed and knocked about Miss Norfolk would havc been third, if not better. The Hurricaua Stakes unexpectedly fell to the Pontiac colt, Kosimiro, which had been prominent in quite a number of races for maiden two-year-olds without winning. Today he got off with a rusli and, showing the way almost throughout, won rather easily, and may he one of the slowly maturing sort, ioldquest put up a good finish and snatched second money away from Arasee in a close fit. The favorite, Jane Swift, gave no evidence of deserving the preference awarded her. The tabled history of the Hurricaua Stakes is as follows: 1890 III Daddy 97 Hewitt 1,150 :59J 1897 Handsel 100 Maher 1,155 :59 1S9S Satin Slipper ...107 N. Number One, a two-year-old that has run some very good races, and also some bad ones, ran one of his good ones when he vanquished some fair horses of different ages in the fourth race. It was a mile dash, and he won all the way in a style suggestive of a partiality to loug-distance racing. Live Wire, Earl G. and Sea "Wolf all ran excellently, but Number One held them safe without trouble. Nimbus ran a sorry race, although promi; nent at the end of three-quarters. Sea Wolf was the favorite, hut was the victim of interference that hurt his chances. Brookdale Nymiih is in rare form just now, and won the Bronx Handicap in fast time from Jack Atkin, but may have been fortunate. Jack Atkin was the favorite, hut. unluckily, was pocketed and held securely for a critical period, then came on with amazing speed when clear, and might have won if favored with a clear course. Adoration, after a long retirement, came out in evident good form and took third money from Ben Ban. Oracu- lum showed great speed in this race and is to be respected hereafter. The tabled history of the Bronx Ilighweight Handicap is as follows: 1895 Wernberg 4 lit". Donohue, showing a return to his California form, ran a good race, and outstayed Killieerankie for second place with very little to spare. Tlie annual military steeplechase feature given by the l.nited Hunts Club has been abandoned this year. 0. II. Pettingill replaced Mars Cassidy as starter at Belmont Park today and his work with the Hag was favorably commented on by race-goers; as a matter of fact it was nearly first class. Mr. Cas-sidy remained away in order to be near Mrs. Cas-sidy, who was to be operated upon. Algernon Daingerlield performed the duties of assistant placing judge for the day. H. M. Mason left for California this morning. On his arrival at Oakland he will begin the preparation of thirty young thoroughbreds for tlie races belonging to W. OB. Macdonough.
