MR. KEENE VS. DUKE OF PORTLAND. Correct Winnings of the Two Stables in 1907 and 1889. The Impudence and ignorance of the average New York turf writer is amazing. The Duke of Portlands stable in tins year 38S9 won 71,754 and not as the New York guesses have the sum 77,574. Those figures can be verified by an examination of tlie Kaeing Calendar, published in London by Messrs. AVcatherby for the Jockey Club. The publication is perfect as a racing record. It makes no errors. Its figures have never been compiled by the New Yorkers, who talk about averaging second monies and various difficulties which, do not exist in the way of obtaining a correct compilation. Daily Racing Form makes correct tabulations. Those about the Duke of Portlands stables winnings are correct, with each pound sterling put into dollars at tlie average exchange rate of .85 to the pound. The totals of the Portland and Keene stables to date arc: James K. Keene 7S,757 Duke of Portland 371,754 Mr. Keenes excess ,003 The English record was beaten when Colin won the Matron Stakes at Belmont Park Monday. After that race they stood this way: .Tames It. Keene 77,237 Duke of Portland 371,754 Mr. Keenes excess ,4S3 The sorry part of it all is that the Chicago papers, which should think and figure for themselves, do not do so, but blindly take the slapdash and incorrect New York guesses and print them as facts. The funny feature of it all is that the 77,074, given in New York as the Duke of Portlands total winnings in 1889 was taken from an Incorrect first table, published a week ago by Daily Iiacing Form, which afterwards checked and balanced its table and corrected some errors.
