COLINS CHAMPAGNE STAKES MR. KEENES" REMARKABLE COLT RUNS HIS LAST 1907 RACE. It Is His Twelfth Win and His Earnings 31,007 The Race an Impressive One-Foot Hurt in Contest. New York, October 10. The mighty Colin m.ido his last public appearance this season in the Champagne Stakes at Belmont Park today and acquitted himself in his usual inspiring and imperial fashion. James R. Keenes unbeaten Commando Pastor-ella two-year-old set the seal upon his fame by scoring a twelfth consecutive victory h this cele brated turf classic at seven furlongs in ti.e remarkable time, considering the manner of its accomplishment and the big weight, 122 pounds carried, of 1:23. Colin was opposed only by Harry Payne Whitneys Stamina, and it was the supreme ease and absence of real effort with which the champion disposed of the pretentions of the admitted best juvenile filly of the year that finally and conclusively demonstrated his extraordinary merit. After witnessing Colins exploit, Mr. Thomas IT. AVilllams, of California, remarked to a coterie of friends on the clubhouse lawn: "I. dont believe there was ever a horse foaled that could beat this one." It is literally true that the owner of the Champagne Stakes winner was represented by his valet and his overcoat." For some unknown reason Mr. Keene was unable to come out to Belmont Park today and for the first time since Colin began his career, his .master failed to be on hand to celebrate the occasion. After the finish of the one-sided duel between the pair, close observers imagined that they could detect signs of soreness behind Colin. It developed subsequently that the pastern of his right hind leg was raw and bleeding slightly from contact with the ground. It was Colins last race of the year. He has no more stake engagements and will go into retirement until next year with a wonderful racord oC uninterrupted success. While it is difficult to draw accurate comparisons between the star horses of different years, it can be said for Colin that many competent judges of horse form consider him the best two-year-old that has ever graced the American turf. There is no reason to doubt that lie lias been opposed by excellent two-year-olds in his races, but he has mastered them all so easily and conclusively as to mark himself in every particular a first-class race horse. If he retains the same form next year he should even excel Sysonbys as yet unmatched record. Here is his record as a two-year-old: Race and Track. Dis. Time. Value. Purse, Belmont 5-8 1:01 $ 930 National Stallion Stk. Belmont. 5-S 5S 9,308 Eclipse Stakes. Belmont 5 1-2 1:00? 8,235 Great Trial Stk. Sir John Johnson was a substantially backed favorite, and ran a good race, but third was the best ho conld do. Yorkist ran well-here and will be dangerous shortly over a longer distance of ground. Benefited by a long rest, and evidently in good form, Aimee C. set a fast pace throughout the second race and won by herself, only Jane Swift offering any serious opposition, and running a good race herself. St. Ilario was a distant third. Aimee C. was deservedly the favorite, but at liberal odds. With only two running in the Champagne Stakes, and the result practically assured in advance, the event was still not without interest, It being supposed to be the last time Colin -would be seen in action Oils year. He gave a superb display of his extraordinary speed and won with exceeding ease. Only Stamina opposed him, and, although having no chance against Colin, her race was good enough to defeat most of the other two-year-olds in training. The tabulated history of the Champagne Stakes since 1S95 is as follows: Year. Winner. Wt. Jockey. Val. Dolly Spanker emphasized his recent displays of good form by defeating Grapple somewhat easily for the New Kochelle Stakes at a mile, but with a stronger and more skillful rider than little Buxton on Grapple, he would probably have had a hard time of it, Grapple losing more ground at the head of the stretch than he was beaten by. Orphan Lad rah a good race and Tony Bonero, after setting a merry pace to the stretch, quit in surprising fashion. The tabled history of the New Rochelle Stakes is as follows: Year. Winner. A. I.ane Allen was the favorite and victor in the mile and a half handicap and gave fresh evidence of what a decidedly tifcftil horse lie is. Ironsides ran a fast and game race himself, hut 120 pounds to 11- on the winner, was loo much for lum and a good second was the best lie could do. Bedouin is probably destined to lie quite a factor in the remaining racing near New York. Infirm legs have interfered with him seriously, but patient training seems to have finally brought him around into good form. At any rate, lie defeated Sea "Wolf and Gretna Green in 1:.".S Hat in the last race of 1 lie day and a horse that can run that fast is good enough for any sort: of company. Mart in Nathnnson arrived from Chicago this morning and was at Belmont Park during the day busily engaged in rounding up owners who intend to race their strings at Oakland: F. J. Farrell lost a 0,000 wager on Grapple in the fourtli race. Tom Shaw bet ,000 on Colin lo win 00, taking odds of 1 to 0. It is officially announced that John Boden will act as racing secretary at the now Arcadia track until the first of the year. Thomas II. Williams is liookcd to leave for Hie west next Sunday. Martin Nathanson is scheduled to leave for Oakland on Oclolicr 2S, from Chicago. B. J. Weller lias notified the layers in the big ring not to accept any wagers or markers in his name except from himself in person. Stalls for 0211 horses have been applied for at the New Orleans tracks. Barney Schreiber will race the biggest string, thirty -live head, at the southern city. C. E. Durncll has acquired A. W. Claxons contract on apprentice jockey J. Kraemer, and will take him to Oakland in November. Jockey Finn lias been set down for the meeting by the starter. v W.
