Six Colts, from Sensation to Colin, and One Filly, The Butterflies, Make Up the List from 1879. Very few years pass without two-year-olds that arc undefeated, by virtue, of few starts and in moderate company. But the undefeated ones of high class, which battle with their compeers, aro few and far between. Colins career, is so remarkable and interesting that some notice of the other great undefeated ones of the past is worth bringing to the attention of readers of Daily Raciug Form. Of them it can be said that they were all remarkable race horses, and, allowing for differences in tracks and several racing conditions, probably would have been able to hold their own worthily when at their best with the more familiar stars of recent years, could such a thing be brought about. George Lorillards Sensation, Star of 1879. Sensation was a beautiful brown colt of faultless action and groat speed. In his time tracks were deep and slow, and the richest stakes were. scant in value compared with those abundantly provided for the juvenile racers of today. He did in his year all that Colin has done this year, . met all the good youngsters of his time and vanquished them conclusively. All of his races were for stakes. He was the property of George Loril-lard throughout his racing career, which only covered his year of triumph. Sickness in the winter following his two-year-old racing incapacitated him from further service on the track. Subsequently he was a successful sire. His racing record, the, year being 1S70, was as follows: Race. Track. DIst. Time. Value. Juvenile Stakes, Jerome Park, 1-2 m. :50 ,150 July Stakes, Monmouth, 5-S m 1:07 2,475 Flash Stakes, Saratoga, 1-2 m :49I 2,100 Saratoga Stakes, Saratoga, 3-4 m 1:18 2,700 August Stakes, Monmouth, 3-4 m 1:18 2,550 Criterion Stakes, Monmouth, 3-4 in.. ...1:22 2,525 Nursery Stakes, Jerome Park, 3-4 in... 1:18 3,100 Central Stakes, Pimlico, 1 m 1:501 2,050 Total 9,G70 Tremont, the Black Wonder of 1886. The year 1SS0 was one of great triumphs for the powerful stable owned by Dwyer Brothers, no horse contributing more effectively than the black two-year-old colt, Treimmt, by Virgil Ann Fcif, by Lexington. He was a truly wonderful two- year-old, exceedingly quick on his feet, aud usually away from the post so fast that his opponents were beaten from the start in vain efforts to match the electric speed he at once developed. In none of his races was there even approximately a close finish, except in the solitary instance of the Surf Stakes at Slieepshcad Bay. Here, in a bad start, ho was practically left at the post, hut took after the others and finally won from Queen of Elizabeth by three-quarters of a length. In all of his other races it was Tremont first at the finish in a canter anywhere from three lengths to ten lengths in front. In the Junior Champion Stakes he defeated such a celebrity as Kingston by eight lengths. Tre- monts seasons record was as follows: Race. Track, Bist. Time. Value. Juvenile Stakes, Jerome Park, 1-2 m. :4S ,400 Sequence Stakes, Jerome Park, 5-8 in. 1:021 2,275 Foam Stakes, Sheepshead Bay, 5-8 m. 1:04 2,800 Surf Stakes, Sheepshead Bay, 5-S m. 1:02 2,875 Zephyr Stakes, Sheepshd Bay, 3-4 m. 1:171 2,075 Paddock Stakes, Sheepshead, 3-4. m. 1:17-1 2,325 Spring Stakes, Sheepshead Bay, 3-1 m. 1:16 2,185 June Stakes, Sheepshead Bay, 3-4 m. 1:1S1 2435 Great Post Stakes, Sheepshead, 3-4 in. 1:191 2,700 Good Bye Stakes, Sheepshead, 3-4 m. 1:15 1,100 Atlantic Stakes, Monmouth, 3-4 m 1:10 2,405 Tyro Stakes, Monmouth, 3-4 in 1:19 4,910 Junior Champion Stakes, Moumtb, 3-1 1:171 8,800 Total ..9,135 Hanovor Was Trcmonts Understudy. In tlio same year that Tremont ran, ISSb", -Dwyer Brothers had another unbeaten two-year-old colt that subsequently was a mighty race horse in other years, while Trcmonts racing was all done when he was a two-year-old. This other colt was Hau- over, a" chestnut colt by Hindoo Bourlion Belle, Tremont was campaigned extensively, hut Hanover was only started in three races. His first essay was in the Hopeful Stakes at Monmouth Park, which he won from Fitzroy with some difficulty by a half length. Then he won the July Stake3 from Oneko, again by a half length, but carried 120 pounds to Onekos 110. His last race was when he won the Sapling Stakes from Kingston by two lengths. In after years, besides being one of the highest-class racers of American turf history, lift also became a great sire when retired to the stud. His two-year-old career was: Race. Track, . Bist. Time. Value. Hopeful Stakes, Monmouth, 8-1 111... 1:151 ,420 July Stakes, Monmouth, 3-4 -m...... 1:15 4,415 Sapling Stakes, Monmouth, 3-1 m 1:17 5,500 Total 4,333 Tha Nevada Wonder of 1889, El Rio Ray. El Rio Reys year was 18S9. He was a -full-1 brother to Emperor of Norfolk, and, probably, natu-, Continued oa eecond, page. SEVEN TWO-YEAR-OLD STARS. Coul inued from first page. rally even a greater race horse. The Emperor was a bay, but iil Rio Key was a big chestnut of mag-nificeiiLappearance, a model of symmetry and power, lie was bred, owned and raced by Theodore Winters of Nevada. His first start was in the St. Louis Brewers Stakes at St. Louis. Then he was brought to Chicago, and at Washington Park won the Kenwood Stakes, Hyde Park Stakes and a purse. Taken east from here ho won the Croat Eclipse Stakes, White Plains Handicap and Dimmow Stakes at the first meeting ever held at Morris Park. His ilight of speed was meteoric, and no weight was too much for his powerful frame. In his first race at AVash-ington Park, with 1215 pounds up, he stumbled and almost fell directly after the start going down so far that his face was squarely against the track. Yet he recovered and in an amazing Ilight of speed S overtook his far-away competitors and finally won from Lord Peyton by a length. Developing lameness after winning the Dunmow he was retired, lie was trained the following year, but, fearing he would break down, Mr. Winters concluded to race him no more. Yet it is a fact that he worked a mile at Washington Park in 1:.".S, with 1-10 pounds up, then far faster than the mile record. His record was: Race. Track, Dist. Time. Value. St. Louis Brewers Stakes, St. L.. 3-4 1:22 ,3S0 Purse, Washington Park, 5 1-2 fur... 1:0S 500 Kenwood Stakes, Washington P., 5-8 m.l:01 2,020 Hyde Park Stks, Wash ton P., 3-4 m. 1:14 J 3,540 Groat Eclipse Stakes, Morris P., :;-4 m. 1:14 2.1,750 White Plains Han., Morris P., :!-4 in. 1:11 0,020 Dunmow Stakes, Morris Park, 3-1 m. 1:121 5,225 Total 0,035 Domino, Colins Mighty Grandfather. Like Colin, his grandsire. Domino, was a. sensational two-year-old, a wonder of speed, courage and ability to carry weight. His nearest approach to defeat was in a match race with Dobbins, the two great colts miming a dead heat. His year of two-year-old glory was in ISO!!, and in honor of the Worlds Fair he was sent out here to Chicago and paid his expenses by capturing the rich Hyde Park Slakes at Washington Park. Otherwise, his triumphs were achieved over the tracks in the vicinity of New York. Ilis record as a money-earning two-year-old has never been closely approached, Colins being nearest to it. His career as a two-year-old produced the following results Race. Track, Dist. Time. Value. Purse, Iravesend, 5-S m 1:02 S95 Great Amer. Stks, Gravesend, 5-S m. 1:01 IS, 075 Great Eclipse Stks, Morris Park, 3-4 1:12 10,750 Great Trial Stks, Sheepshead, 3-4 m. 1:14 2:1,100 Hyde Park Stks, Washington P., 3-4 1:14 10,000 Produce Stakes, Monmouth, .5-4 m 1:141 10.S75 Futurity Slakes, Sheepshead, F. May 2S, 1S04, Gideon and Daly started a beautiful bay lilly by Sir Dixon Mercedes in a purse race at Gravesend. Her nan.e was The Butterfiies, and. she won easily from Philoniena, June 4. She won another purse at Morris Park, defeating Ridicule and some other two-year-olds by two lengths. That was all the racing she did until she went to the post favorite for the Futurity at Sheepshead Bay, August 25. She Avon all the way, but only defeated Brandywlue by a good neck in fast time. She was a great filly, undoubtedly, and even able to defeat the great Domino the next year. Her short campaign as a two-year-old was as follows: Race. Track, Dist. Time. Value. Purse, iravesend, 5-S m... 1:03 S05 Purse, Morris Park, 5-S m :50 S35 Futurity Stakes, Sheepshead, F. C... 1:11 4S.710 Total .0,410 Colin, the Clean-Cut Champion of 1907. Colin retires until 100S with a wonderful record pf uninterrupted success. While it is difficult to draw accurate comparisons between the star horses of different years, it can be said for Colin that many competent judges of horse form consider him the best two-year-old that lias ever graced the American turf. There Is no reason to doubt that he has been opposed by excellent two-year-olds In his races, but he lias mastered them all so easily and conclusively as to mark himself in every particular a first-class race horse. If he retains the same form next year lie should even excel Sysonbys as yet unmatched record. Here is his record as a two-year-old: Race arid Track. Dis. Time. Value.
