MAKES IT THREE STRAIGHT. LENS TAKES HIS THIRD CONSECUTIVE RACE FROM SPEEDY OPPONENTS. Severus Also Wins for Lucky Owner Dunne Dashaway Badly Beaten More Arrivals from Various Points. New Orleans, La., December 4. Todays card was probably the poorest or the meetiug. Big fields composed of low-class horses went to the post in the first three, and the bettors having slight knowledge of their form caused little interest to be manifested in their running. The feature race, if such it could be called, was the fourth, in which a shifty band of sprinters met, including Lens and Al Mullcr. The latter, on account of his impressive victories on the only two occasions he had started, was made favorite over Lens. Lens gained the verdict over him by a short margin. Dashaways unexpected defeat in the fifth, for which lie was held ji strong favorite, was the chief incident of the afternoon. At no stage of the race did lie win able to get into contention, and was beaten off throughout, finishing last by many lengths. Hyperion II., after racing Donna into defeat in the first three-quarters came away to an easy victory over Besterling. The latter showed a good perfenu-uuce and captured second place from Harting, which ran today in the name of J. W. Gorman, the tincinnati broker. In addition to winning with Lens, Pat Dunne annexed a purse witli Severus when he led the others home in the third race. Jockey Delaby was largely responsible for Dr. Mctlucrs defeat in the closing race by Docile. Delaby made too much uso of Dr. McCluer in the early stages and was unprepared for the winners rush in the stretch. Jockey McDaniel rode his first winner of the meeting when ho piloted Burlew and ONeills Georgia Girl home in the opening dash. Asteroid, at a long price, upset calculations in the second by winning in a canter from Tom McAfee. The strongly hacked Constantia was best, hut ran out on the eli-ctch turn, which" cost her the race. .Sallie Harry, which started in the opening race, ran away a mile while going to the post and the others were dispatched without her. She was ridden by jockey Dyer, a recent comer from the half-mile track. He is said to be a promising youngster and is at present under contract to C. K. Mahone. The judges before the racing began bad jockey Finn before them on complaint that be had not ridden Anna Day to orders in Tuesdays last race. In addition to a sharp lecture they suspended him for one week for his offense. Starter Dade lifted the ban against jockey Nieol and he will be allowed to accept mounts tomorrow. Harry Morrissey, assistant starter to Mars Cas-sidy, arrived today and stated that Mrs. Cassidy had improved so much in the past few days that it is now a certainty that Cassidy will be on baud to dispatch the fields at the opening of the Fair Grounds meeting next Monday. Matt J. Winn stated today that James Butler, owner of the Empire City track, would be here for the holidays. Extensive improvements are in contemplation for the Yonkers track, and many valuable stakes will lc offered horsemen to run for. Jockey YV. Mclntyre was among todays arrivals from Denning. Uoger Minton, with ten horses owned by Sam Lazarus, and G. Luckey, with a string of six, came in today. Jockey James Hogg came with the Minton consignment. MUDDY GOING AT OAKLAND. V FIRST RAIN OF THE SEASON SLOWS UP THE RECORD-BREAKING TRACK. Peter Sterling Wins Praise for a Good Performance Blondy Defeats San Nicholas Some Ruling Off. Oakland, Cal., December 4. After a seven months spell of dry weather and perpetual sunshine, the twenty-second day of the present meeting opened inawsplciously for the chief of outdoor sports, racing. A light rain fell during the forenoon, converted the local track into a state of plastery mud and made the task of picking the winners in- the majority of the six races extremely puzzling. Notwithstanding this handicap, racegoers fared unusually well in their ring operations with the successes of the favorite Peter Sterling in the main feature, of Heather Scott in , the opening race, of Agnolo, the second choice and best backed horse in the next race and, finally over the victory of Blondy, also another big money carrier and, but for a fraction of odds, the actual favorite, in the fifth. The other two winners, Serenity and Captain Burnett, third choices in the betting, were briskly backed across the board and the layers, after paying out place and show wagers on this pair, broke no more than even, despite the downfall of the two short-priced starters, Meada aud Fisher Boy. The chief race, the Berkeley Handicap, at a mile and an eighth, attracted a superior class field of six starters, including Peter Sterling, San Alviso, Red Leaf, Dollie Dollars, Janeta and Ovelando. The Trotter four-year-old revealed high class form in his decisive defeat of the quintette opposed to him. He was a heavily backed favorite and carried 117 pounds to an easy victory in the fast time for the slow, state of the going of 1:54. After the race experts and horsemen were generally inclined to the belief that Peter Sterling is the best horse iu training at present in the United States. The discouraging weather conditions kept the attendance today down to 5,000. Guy Burns was the only jockey of note to score a sucess during the afternoon. Both Miller aud Dugan were eclipsed by the lesser known contingent of jockeys riding here. The stewards took action in the John Strohol-Mentry-lm Joe "doping" and bribery case by ruling the former off the turf. The incident is now considered closed. O. F.Hume, of the Marchmont Stable, was also found gTttlty of using or administering stimulants to the horse Saint Modan before the running of the first race on Tuesday and suspended indefinitely. The stewards also recommended that his licenso as trainer be revoked. Emma G., which was backed all over the country, according to rumor, to win the first race, was virtually left at the post.
