RACE TRACK AT HAMMOND; MAYBE. It is rumored that quiet negotiations are being conducted by a Chicago syndicate for the purchase or lease of a large tract of land near Hammond, Indiana, to be used .-is a race track site if the political outlook next year will warrant the building of a mile track and the necessary buildings. Governor J. Frank Hanly, who, during his term of office has been violently opposed to racing, retires as chief executive January 1, 1909, and the promoters of the Hammond project believe that his successor will not be opposed to the holding of race meetings in that state. If the result of the election next fall is favorable, as the" promoters now anticipate, steps will be immediately taken towards the construction of the necessary p"lant. In any event no attempt will be made to hold a meeting until after there has been a change in the state administration.
