ENGLISH SIRES OF TWO-YEAR-OLDS. St.. Frusquin in the Lead for This Year with Gallinule a Good Second. Discussing the comparative success of English sires through their two-year-olds of 1907, "Special Commissioner" of London Sporting Life, writing at the end of the first week of November, said: "Three months have elapsed since the last occasion on which I drew attention in this column to the successful sires of two-year-olds. A convenient opportunity now presents itself for reviewing the situation in the light of subsequent happenings. There are one or two valuable nurseries in the programs of forthcoming meetings the Knowsley at Liverpool, for example, which has been advanced from ,500 to ,000 by way of suitably commemorating the new straight five-furlong course; but we now have all the most important two-year-old races behind us, and nothing that may occur between now and the -end of the Manchester meeting is likely to have much effect on the figures which 1 am aliout to set forth. In the appended table I have Included all the sires whose two-year-olds had at the close of the noughton meeting won stakes amounting to " iOQOor aWjtg . Sire. Winners. Races. Value. The new recruits are William the Third, Forfarshire, Ladas, Wolfs Crag, Raeburn, Isinglass, Cherry Tree, Melton and Kings Messenger. So far as the others are concerned there have been some remarkable changes. St. Frusquin, for instance, has gone from the eighteenth place to the top. Needless to say, he owes his advancement almost entirely to the brilliant achievements of Lesbia. Commencing with the Prince of AVales Plate at York, site scored five times, her total being 0,-332.30. None other of St. Frusquins offspring has done as well as this for Lim the first season. Flotsam and Quintessence won 5,1S0 and 2,S50 respectively, as two-year-olds. St. Amant, in 1903, carried off three races worth 5,S15, and two years ago Flair won 0,920. It will be observed that so far St. Frusquin lias done best with his fillies. So did his sire, St. Simon, at the commencement of liis stud career. There can, I think, be little doubt that Flair and Lesbia, who are sisters, are the best of either sex got by St. Frusquin, and it is worthy of note that his great rival, Persimmon, is also renowned chiefly as the sire of Sceptre. With equal luck, both would have had a Derby winner, for while St. Frusquin is represented on the roll of honor by St. Amant, Persimmon would almost certainly have scored with tfinfandel but for the untimely death of Colonel McCalmont, which voided his nomination. Perhaps, however, it is better not to talk of luck in this connection, because it may bo taken for granted, as I pointed out on Saturday, that Flair would have won the Derby had she not broken down after her victory in the One Thousand Guineas. Apart from Lesbia the chief contributor, so far as : two-year-olds are concerned, to St. Frusquins aggregate, is Lord Carnarvons St. Cyril. But for his wind infirmity, which necessitated the insertion of a tube in his throat, this youngster would in all probability have been one of tlio best of his year. So far as make and shape are concerned, he is all that could be desired, and allied to his brilliant speed are courage and pertinacity. It may not be generally known that lie -is entered for botli the Derby and St. Lcger next season. "Gallinule, now second in the list, was first three months ago. It then seemed highly probable that he would maintaiu the premier position to the end of the season,- but the totally unexpected collapse or White Eagle greatly impaired his prospects. This colt had already placed 7,S57.50 to his account, and it seemed a foregone conclusion that he would secure one or more of the big autumn prizes, but his failure in the contest for the Champagne Stakes at Doncaster completely altered the situation. His great performance at Sandown, where he gave twelve pounds and a head beating to Rhodora, exhausted bis store of nervous energy. Everybody recognized at the time that he had accomplished a tremendous feat; after seeing Rhodora win the Dewhurst Plate we are better able to guage the value of the achievement. It is quite likely that White Eagle will re-appear as a three-year-old with all his power restored to him. If so, what are the odds against his being the best of the colts?. Since the beginning of August, Gallinules list of two-year-old winners has been strengthened by the addition of Miranda and French Partridge. The former has not fulfilled the promise she displayed at the First October Meeting, but French Partridge has won a couple of races worth ,500 performances which have ehielly served the purpose of enhancing the reputation of Mountain Apple, who defeated her so easily in the race for the Clearwell Stakes. Persimmons total lias received an addition of nearly 0,000 iu the course of the three months. The contributors during this period have been Royal Realm, Rushcutter, Your Majesty and Mountain Apple. The last-named is unquestionably the most promising of this quartet, and in due season we shall probably find that in giving him only 113 pounds, the framcrs of the Free Handicap greatlj underrated his ability. Orme owes his prominence iu our list to the victories gained by Vamose and Rhodora. The former is, it is to be feared, an exploded force, but there are great possibilities in Rhodora, sister to Orby. She. won the Dewhurst Plate in great style aud, though not at present to 10 classed with Lesbia, there is so much more of lier that she may not be far behind Sir Daniel Coopers filly next year. And so one .might go on, but I will- not -pursue this analysis further at present. I shall have more to say on the subject when the full seasons records are available."
