GOOD ONES FOR BREEDING BUREAU. 1 Lamplighter to Start List in Missouri Colonel Wheeler the First for California. l Lamplighter, a bay horse, IS, by Spendthrift f Torchlight, purchased at the recent sales at Lex- i ingtou by Barney Schreibcr for 00, will be the j nucleus of a breeding bureau in tlie state of Mis- souri. Lamplighter was a grand race horse and i sire and should prove a valuable acquisition to i those who would produce horses with a strain of j thoroughbred blood. t Lamplighter was raced as a two-year-old in 1S91 : by the late Captain S. S. Brown, in whose colors 1 he won six races that year, among them being the Optional Stakes at Monmouth, where he defeated Mascot, Hamilton, Wah Jim and other fast ones. Running in the colors of Brown and Rogers for the . major part of the season, and later the Rancocas s Stable, of his three-year-old career, Lamplighter f won many races of merit. His first start was in the Fort Hamilton Handicap at Gravesend, where lie finished second to St. Florian. Next was a vie- tory iu the Sea ami Sound Stakes at Morris Park, which he won by three lengths. Then came the : Suburban, where he finished third to Montana and 1 Major Homo in a driving finish, being beaten a half length and a head. The Thistle, Champion and : Choice Stakes, Twin City and Bridge Handicaps ! and the First and Second Specials fell to his prowess before his campaign as a three-year-old ended. Diablo conquered the good son of Spendthrift in his first start as a four-year-old in the Brooklyn Handicap. Lamplighter carried 125 pounds in this race to Diahlos 112, and was beaten a length and a half. Following this came his victories in the Standard and Maturity Stakes at Gravesend, lwtli of which he won with ease. After winning four more races for the Rancocas Stable Lamplighter passed into the hands of Gottfried Walbaum. His first start for his new owner resulted in a victory in the Oriental Handicap at Gravesend, in which he defeated such high-class racers as Banquet, Sir Walter and others. The First Special was again his, lieating Cadmus, his only opponent, by two lengths on a heavy track. Lamplighter made his first appearance at the old Guttcnberg track in a match with Tammany for a purse of ,000 and ,500 a side. In this lie was decisively beaten by four lengths. Starting for the last time in the east this season he wou the Country Club Handicap at Morris Park, carrying 130 pounds, and defeated Charade, Reckon, Picknicker and Low lander, running the mile and an eighth in 1:54. Lamplighter was then taken west to conquer, but did not accomplish much. Starting three times at Hawthorne, hut little of his former form was displayed, as lie was beaten fifteen lengths by Yo Tamhien in a match race, at .one and one-eighth miles, and finished a bad third in a three-cornered special, Clifford winning by eight lengths, with Yo Tambieii ten lengths in front of Lamplighter. This wits Ills last start as a four-year-old. Lamplighter started but nine times in his career as a five-year-old, and was victorious in four races and unplaced but once. About his best achievements of the year were the winning of the Canadian Stakes and Merchants Handicap at Saratoga. Late in the year 1895 Lamplighter was purchased from Walbaum by Milton Young, for whom he won one race, a purse at a mile, run at Gravesend. In tills he defeated such cracks as Cash Day, Gotham and Brandywine. His last start under colors was in a purse at Morris Park, where he finished unplaced. He was then retired to the stud, making a great-success as a sire, among his produce being many stake winners. Williams was in Nfw York last fall he devoted considerable time investigating the modus operandi of the Jockey Club in conducting its Breeding Bureau in that state and shortly after Mr. Williams returned to Sun Francisco he announced his intention of founding a similar breeding bureau for California to be conducted by tlie Pacific Jockey Club. When this announcement was made, Colonel Daniel Burns signified his intention of presenting Colonel Wheeler, tthe thirteen-year-old chestnut stallion, which has liecn doing stud duty at thp Burns and Waterhouse Candelaria Stud farm at Hoplaud, Mendocino county, J 1 l f i j i i j t : 1 . s f : 1 : ! Haggin at the famous Rancho del Paso Stud at Sacramento and is by Midlothian Agnes formerly Ondalight, by Onondaga. Colonel AVheeler raced three years, as a two, three and four-year-old. During these three years he won a number of good races, meeting and defeating the best of his age at the tracks on which he raced. He was raced by Messrs. Burns and Waterhouse and was ridden in nearly all of Ills races by either Thorpe or Jones. Colonel Wheeler made his first start at Ingleside, January 20, 1890 and was unplaced. Ten days later he was started again, but did not finish in the money. In his third race he finished second to W. OB. Mac-donoughs Zamar II. He won his next three races, defeating Scarborough, Lady Laurelwood, Charlc-mange, Torpedo, Alma Dale, St. Duustin, Gordon, and Queen Flambeau among others. He was then shipped to Milwaukee, where he won one of three starts. From there he was taken to St. Louis, where he won his third start August 21, and followed this victory with two more out of five races. His first race as a three-year-old, was at Ingleside February 22, 1S97 aud, after his next start, he .vas only once outside the money during the year. His last race of the season was in the Naglee Selling Stakes, in which lie finished second to his stable mate, Shasta Water. Satsuma, Fleur de Lis and St. Callatine and his stable mate, Shasta Water. In the McLaughlin Soiling Stakes five days later he was beaten by Dr. II. E. Rowells Satsuma by a nose. Garland Barr, King William, Tom Cromwell and Buekwa finished in the order named behind him. The mile and one-sixteenth was run in 1:48 J over a slow track. Colonel AVheeler ran his last race September 0, 1S9S, during the race meeting held at Sacramento in conjunction with the State Fair. In this race he finished third to Ko Ko and Scarborough. Colonel Wheeler was a good performer at any weight, but preferred a fast track. As a sire he has already sent Princess Wheeler, Gossiper II., Storma, Colonel Faverdale, Costados, Acreedor, My Dulcie, Santa Juanita and other good performers to the races since his retirement from the turf.
