LEE ROSE A CRACKEEJACK. WINS OAKLANDS TWO-YEAR-OLD RACE IN COMMANDING STYLE. St. Francis Defeats Burleigh in a Close Finish-Billy Pullman Scores — Favorites at a Discount. Oakland. Cal.. January 8. — Lee Rose. O. A. Bi-auchis crack two-year-old. made his second appearance under colors at Oakland today* and confirmed the high estimate of his prowess formed by horsemen ..ml the public in general, by a cantering victory in the second race over Thomas H. Williams crack "debutante Rubia Grauda. and seven others in the very fast time for the slow track of thirty-six and one-fifth seconds. The Rodeo Handicap resulted in an upset that meant the loss of many dollars to the majority of the race goers present. Burleigh, ridden by Waller Miller, was heavily backed at odds-on to beat the six ordinary racers opposed to him, but he met defeat by his riders waiting tactics which allowed St. Francis to make his owu running undisturbed and enabled him to just last the journey and stall off the lielated rush of the favorite. Outsiders and second and third choices monopolized the afternoons racing honors, the only winning favorite lieing Lee Rose. J. Mclntyre rode a bad looking race on Gromoboi, the hotly backed favorite in the long-distance race. Suicidal waiting tactics were employed with the Keene horse in the early running, and when he seemed like running by the leader on the far turn he was taken Into the very deep going and effectually anchored. From a speculative standpoint it was one of the most unsatisfactory days of the present meeting. The weather conditions were discouraging, the track unusually deceptive and slow, but the attendance was fully up to the mark and thirty-six bookmakers held sway in the ring. Mose Goldblatt wired from New Orleans yesterday that he would leave the Crescent City for Emeryville next Sunday with his own stable and several of Burlew and ONeills string.
