MISTAKES OWNERS OF RACERS MAKE. When Ramus pulled up lame in the fifth race at Oakland Friday alter finishing second to Dorado. owner T. H. Stevens was asked if the horse had ever seemeu* disposed to lameness, to which Stevens replied that the fact Ramus was in a 00 selling race was a sufficient answer to the question and continued: "If he had four good legs under him I would want just ten times that amount for him." said the Kenluckian. "After he won the Waterhouse Cup last year I priced Mm at $.".000 and refused ft.SW for him. Of course I realize now ihat I made a mistake in not letting him go. but unloruinatcly a persons foresight is not as good M his hindsight. After the cup race Ramus struck himself iu a mile and a quarter race and 1 made the mistake of going ahead with him to get him ready for the four-mile race, and he broke down on me. This was not the first mistake I ever made though. I refused $.1,000 for Siddons out here after he w hi the long race and afterward gave him away. Ulatahaa are a part of racing in all its departments.
