Montgomery, relent winner of the Burns Handicap al Oakland, vasily deiuonsti at 1 that he is by far the best horse now in training in California, by winning the California Handicap in a canter, easily packing his burden of 128 pounds and simply making his op poiienis look cheap when the real racing began on the turn for home. Although he was held at short odds his victory was popular, the occupants of the grandstand shouting vociferously as he romped past the judges. A beauliful Moral horseshoe was placed around his neck, the big horse tamely submitting to it and appearing to appreciate his laurels. Iln- beautiful weather brought out one of th • largest crowds ever seen at a southern California race track. Secretary K. C. The first run -up in some time was done by Hick Williams, who ran up Alma Hoy from 111 to MM and secured him. John W. Schorr, the Memphis brewer and turfman, who has been here for a short stay. left for San Francisco tonight. Achieve won her third successive race and the second at this track when she easily beat a good hand of youngsters in the secoud race and established a new track record for the distance. C. W. Bile ran a good race and was easily best of the others. W. B. Jennings did not ship his highly bred Ally. Itesegal. to Oakland to start in the California Oaks, as he had previously a !■ II pel lit, hut kept her hero to start in the handicap for three-year-olds. When it came to the running of the race she showed great speed throughout and finished an easy winner. Bart Tide was in close pursuit of the winner all the way but second place was the best he could gain.
