CALIFORNIA OAKS DECIDED THE USUAL SURPRISE IN FILLY STAKES IS FURNISHED BY CARMELINA. Keep Moving Defeats Marian Casey for Second Money — Poor Riding Defeats Duke of Milan — St. Francis in Front. Oakland. Cal.. February 1.— H. W. Hoags three-year-old bay filly Carineliua captured the California Oaks at Oakland today from one of the best bands of fillies that ever contested for the race. Carmclina was the extreme outsider in the betting and her astute owner backed her well at the long odds on the strength of the extraordinary improvement she has shown in her receut work. Interest iu this years Oaks was greatly enhanced by the presence of the crack eastern filly. Keep Moving, which bad been brought on from New Orleans expressly with a view to its winning. On th" strength of Marian Caseys ridiculously easy victory over Keep Moving at even weights recently, the consistent Star Ruby filly was made a hot favorite and entrusted with limit wagers at slim i odds by backers of favorites and when the result appeared to be lu doubt during the running of the last hundred yards, with the possibility of delcai for the favorite imminent, the great throng broke into a wild demonstration of applause when it perceived Carineliua steal swiftly up on the inside ami pass Keep Moving right at the end. The tabulated history of the California Oaks is as follows: Year. Winner. Wt. Jockey. Val. Time. ISO*; Argentina 117 Doggett tl.htO % Bl 1 1S07 Not run this year. MM Rrinr Sweet 117 A. The remainder of tin- card included three good secondary features, the juvenile race, won by M»d-rileuo. the l!ronlwi otl Handicap annexed by Mis.-. Rillie, and tin- closing affair at six and a half furlongs, in which the crack sprinter, Cemuiell. was beaten by St. Francis. Outsiders swept the board, and the speculatively inclined public sustaiued another very disastrous day. W. E. Leminon, part owner of Pajarolla. has Iieeu fully exonerated from any connection with the pulling of the horse Pajaroita last December, in which the trainer and jockey were implicated, aud subsequently ruled off. Both Keogh and Davis were in the saddle today and their work was very unsatisfactory. In the t;ase of Davis, particularly, it was almost criminal to intrust a horse to a boy who had just got up from a sick bed iu such atrocious weather. Neither Marian Casey nor Oemmell, two public choices, had much of a chance under him. Sandy is another case of a sickly jockey always out of condition, and who should not be allowed to accept mounts until he has recovered strength enough to guide them a straight course. His riding of Masons crack two-year-old. Duke of Milan, was conspicuously weak. Duke of Milan was so inucii the best that he could have been left at the post and won had Sandy been able to infuse a lit t lo vigor into his ride.
