CARMAN PUTS GUY BURNS ON THE GROUND. Gives Mounts to Moriarity, Who Permits Mark Antony II, to Swerve and Loses Race. Los Angeles. Cal.. February 11. — K. F. Carman was very much dissatisfied today with the way his lightweight jockey. G. Burns, has been riding lately. He has set him down and is using Moriarity in his place. The change was of little benefit as Moriarity threw away the fourth race with Mark Antony II. when he swerved badly toward the inside rail in the cloning strides. tnwieldy fields were the rule today, but Holtman was at his best, sending the horses away without any delay at the barrier. Colonel Jack pulled up lame in his warm-up. He was excused and twenty minutes allowed lor a new hook. Word has readied here that Charles G. Gates ami Jesse Lewisohn will be here in a day or two and will spend some tiuie in Los Angeles. Their presence will probably add some spirit to the speculative end of the racing. The first race was won by Merrill from the Carman stable in little lietter than a canter from the favorite. Stray. The latter set the pace for a half mile, but tired suddenly near the end. Daisy Frost, finishing fast under punishment, took third place. H. T. Griffins tilly. Bold, from a quick start In! throughout in the two-year-old race, but was driving at the end lo withstand the resolute challenge of Palo Alto. The latter was always the nearest contender, and Buxton in taking his mount to the insjde in the fctretch run almost succeeded ill getting up unknown to Preston. Miller succeeded in winning with bis third mount when Pontotoc won by a narrow margin from Sioiiey Lee. The latter was closing fast on tbe winner when he suddenly tired in the last few strides. Sidney F. was returned the winner of the handicap, which featured the card, but it was a hollow victory, as Mark Antony II. would have probably won but for Moriarity allowing him to swerve sharply against the inside fence in the last few-strides. Mary F. led her opponents to the stretch, where she quit and retired to last position. Crepps Beckham was backed extensively by owner Alvt-y and his friends, but their expected coup came to naught as their candidate made a dismal failure. Fastoso, the second choice, wilh Miller up, followed IMrd of Passage closely throughout and outstayed him in the closing strides.
