TAME SPORT AT OAKLAND. DRYING-OUT AND DIFFICULT TRACK RENDERS RESULTS HARD TO FORECAST. Fred Bent Defeats Red Leaf in the Chief Feature of the Day — Little Jane Runs a Disappointing Race — Turfman Given a Warning. Oakland. Cal.. February 11.— The Latiirop Hand! cap, todays mile and a sixteenth feature at Oak land, was captured in easy fashion by Fred Rem. The gaunt -looking Salvado gelding was opposed by a half-dozen good performers. Including Bed Leaf, the runner-up in Saturdays Palace Hotel Stakes. Heavy support developed at the last moment for Keenes old mare, forcing her price Into actual favoritism at post time. Fred Bent, which rub-d a steady favorite throughout the betting, was the nearest approach to a public choice to reward his backers during the afternoon. Aliout the worst upset on the card occurred in the two-year-old race won by Lavkville. The start has apparently decided almost every two-year old race run off on the local track this season, and todays juvenile affair was no exception. That a slow-going, diminutive novice like A. Walsh should l»e able to beat all the others away from the post excited wonder among the spectators. Race-goers s»eculated freely as to the cause of Little Janes defeat by such an ordinary animal as tbe Applegate filly. The highly tried Biasiiigame favorite was ridden by J. Hayes and on tic strength of her splendid showing when making her debut on the turf a week ago today was almost backed off the boards. The drying-out track made the going decidedly deceptive and puzzling to form players, and the downfall of the favorites, with the solitary exception referred to. evoked little or no surprise. First class weather obtained today and a crowd of average proportions journeyed to the Oakland race course. The chief attractions, however. Walter Miller and the Williams stable of consistent racers, are still at Santa Anita, which without doubt affects tie- patronage. According to reliable, but unofficial authority. Mose Goldldatt has been warned to keep to the straight and narrow path in his racing operations.
