JACK ATKINS GRAND FORM TAKES UP HEAVY IMPOST AND CANTERS HOME IN FRONT OF LENS. Task Master Wins Through Disqualification of Financier — Oolla Takes His Daily Two-Year- Old Race— The Bear Defeats Toy Boy. New Orleans. I.a.. February IS. — The presence of several good horses in the different races this afternoon helped to improve the sport, nnd furnished I lie iM-st contests of the present week. Warm weather caused an overflow attendance and specula tion almost readied high water mark. Tlie track liad iniprored to a noticeable extent, but was still soft and flow, as shown by the time made in the rive furlongs splint, in which sonic of the best short-distance racers at the track engaged. That Jack Atkin is the kin;; pin in the sprint-lag division, excepting Cliapultepec. was further demonstrated when he conceded lumps of weight to his opponents in the six furlongs handicap and made them look Heap by winning in impressive fashion. It was the old story of going out into an early lead and maintaining a auecdy pace which soon had his ally followers laboring badly to keep in striking distance for a half and thereafter they were too lired to give him an argument and lie came on to mi easy victory. 1*. Dunnes Lens ran a game race, but the best it availed him was to beat Hyperion II. for second place. Pasadena, one of the stutters, propped at tlie barriers rise aiid was practically left, but closed a big gap and was worked out an additional quarter covering the mile in 1:4." . Jockey Xotter upset a coup of no mean proportions in tlie second lace when he sharply fouled Lis nearest attendants while astride Financier. The interference which occurred in the last furlong, was so plain that a great crowd swarmed around the judges stand. The officials promptly disqualified financier, wliirh had won. and gave the race to Task Master. Bobbin Around and Dick Rose, gaining second and third places res|KCtively by the dis placement of Financier. Risk, which was the chief sufferer by the fouling, had to be taken back sharply to keep from going over the fence. Xotter also attempted sharp practice while astride of Toy Boy in the third race when lie carried The Bear wide on the stretch turn. The action gave him an advantage and for a short space it appeared as it lie would land the Fuller representative a winner, but McDanicl rixle what probably was one of the strongest finishes of his life and got his mount up in the last stride. Bene and rider were Literally applauded on their return to the scales. The phenomenal success of the L. A. Cella young slers continues ami his Irrigator had slight ilifti cully in leading a fair band of juveniles to the finish. Edwin L. showed a smart |ierformance by taking second place from Trappc. Swing, the favorite, was sent away in a rear posit inn. which disposed of his chances to win. Artful Lodger again furnished the unexpected by vt Mining the tilth race from a good band of racers. He was at liberal odds and his connections profited handsomely. Saiiiesaw enabled Barney Schroiber to land his second purse of tlie afternoon when she won the sith racey The closing race brought together a miscellaneous band of bad racers ami Jockeys, victory finally going lo Lady Kthel. The officials disclaimed having received a report from Vtcrinarian keogli relative to Balbert and tlie probabilities are that none will be made to them. Mr. Corrigan, when he requested Keogh to make an examination as to the horses condition, did so to confirm his owu suspicion that tlie horse had been stimulated and with no idea of making charges against trainer Bellcw. It is opljouul witli lite offi. ials to request veterinarian Koogh to apart «s to whether Ralbert was --doped" at not. The Judges are attempting to stamp out rough riding and suspended jockeys .1. Lee and McCahcy for throe dais each for* their foul efforts. The ban against jockey pp-keiis has been partially lifted and in future that rider will be allowed to ride for his eoiil raei employer. Jockey Nicol was again suspended for live days by the starter for disobedience at the post. There inM considerable comment because Xotter craped even a reprimand for his rough tactics in the second and third races. Secretary J. B. Dillon of tlie Latouia Jockey Club j« receiving a record number of entries to his stakes. Burlew and "Weill have said they will engage cliapultepec and Angelus in the Derby. The story that Hay Thompson, now running as a three year-old. was a year older, is not home out by tlie records. The foal l ook of lMlo has him duly registered, which would make it certain he is but three years old.
