AUNT AGGIE FIRST IN WOODLANDS STAKES. Defeats Lee Rose in Fast Race — Shilling Rides in Groat Form — Jockey Rice Meets Mishap. lAta Angeles, Cal., February 29. — The racing today was characterized by some of the best contests of the season and witnessed by a big crowd. R. L. Thomas Aunt Aggie carried off the honors by winning the Woodlands Stakes. A flying start gave h r enough advantage at he beginning to outstay Lee Rose in a splendid closing effort. The winner, as is customary, was wreathed with a Moral horseshoe amid great enthusiasm. The opening rac- was marred by a painful accident to jockey T. Rice, who had the mouut on the choice. Raleigh. When the barrier went up, Raleigh got into a jam and falling heavily on Rico, brok • his collarbone. The draw-in today saw twenty-three liooks doing business in the ring. Dredger was well backed just before post time by a wise set to beat Ampedo. the favorite, and never left the result in doubt after the rise of the barrier. Ampedo ran well to the stretch, where he tired, permitting Fisher Boy to take second place. The Walsh entry, consisting of his new acquisition, Lee Rose, and Queens Grove, was accorded the i»ost of favoritism in the Woodlands Stakes. Lee Rose met his first defeat when Aunt Aggie outstayed him under gentle urging iu the stretch drive. Lee Rose was probably lucky to finish in second place, as Horace II. seemed to have it safe but faltered iu the last few strides. Shilling rode his fourth winner when Merlingo finished an easy victor over Avontellus in the fifth race. Jock y Preston rode his second winner with the Texas colt. Hidden Haud, from the stable of J. F. Newman. Taylor George, the favorite, was off in a tangle and made a determined challenge in the middle quarter, but quit badly iu the stretch.
