EL CUCHILL0 DEPARTS FOR FRANCE. New York. February 29.— Howard Lewis. Jr., manager of Joseph E. Wideners steeplechasers, today shipped El Cuchillo to France on the steamship Minnetonka iu charge of a stable man who will remain with the big jumper until he is again brought back to this country. The Carlsbad horse is bigger and better looking than he was last year and is in the best of condition, but perhaps a trifle high in flesh. He will be, during his stay in France under the direct management of Wallace Davis, the American trainer who has for several years successfully managed the stable of Mr. Bischoff. Mr. Widener will leave for Europe next week and will be in France to see his horse race over the difficult course at Auteuil. In speaking of the brother of Coliguy, Mr. Widener says: "I do not believe there is in America today a horse better qualified for French racing than he. The only objection I have to him is that he is not built for weight-carrying and he is a trifle nervous. If things do no6 go to suit him he is apt to fret and stew himself out of form. If he doea this the French of course will say that American jumpers will not do in their country. But, of course, they will not see El Cuchillo at his best."
