TWO CELLA CRACKS SCORE. MARSE ABE TAKES THE CARNIVAL STAKES IN GALLANT FASHION. Sea Swell Proves Victor in the Opening Race — First Premium Defeats Alma Durour — Al Muller and Donna Prove Surprises. New Orleans. La.. March 7. — Todays card, while lacking in quantity, was more than offset by quality, and resulted in one of. the liest days sport of the season. The Carnival Stakes, at four and a half furlongs, was the principal race, and many of tin-best youngsters here were engaged. Marse Abe, I.. A. Cellas crack, was an overwhelming favorite and made good, but not in the fashion his backers anticipated, for Brougham, which finished second, clung to him throughout and only in the final stride did Marse Alie manage to draw clear. Irrigator, Marse Alics stable companion, took third place. On Marse Abes showing today he may be going back, but allowances can l e made for his trying to run out. Notter. his ri/ler. was forced to whip him over the head, and landed one of his blows on Marse Abes right eye. which caused a big swelling. Another of Cellas youngsters, Sea Swell, won the opening race, for which he was a pronounced favorite. Elizabeth Harwood was the runner-up all the way and was gaining on the winner near the finish, but on sufferance. The mile and a furlong handicap, which preceded the stake race, went to First Premium, heavily supported at good odds. Alma Dufour beat Yankee Girl for second place. McDanicl also put up an alleged unsatisfactory ride on Heine in the sixth race and. this is also being investigated. Toy Boy and The Bear again met, this time at a weight advantage In favor of Toy Boy. The race was deenid to be between the pair, but Al Muller upset all the calculations by winning all the way, Toy Boy easily disposing of The Bear for second place. The closing race went to Belle Scott, skillfully HHm by Notter. Lady Vincent was the choice, but at no time was she a serious factor. After the finish, V. B. Freeman, owner of Grenade, claimed Artful Dodger for 00 and J. S. Ward in retaliation claimed Lady Vincent for a like amount. .Jockey V. Powers will leave here for Benning, wher ■ he will be given a trial by Mr. Belmont, and if his riding proves satisfactory, he will be signed to a contract. Considerable favor was taken from the proposed Havana race meeting when horsemen intending to ship to the Cuban capital were informed at the boat landing this morning that the freight on horses would not be defrayed by the Jockey Club; also that instead of running forty-seven days, as at first announced, assurances could only l o given at present that the meeting would last fifteen days. This caused a number of horsemen to unload their horses and return to the Fair Grounds. J. W. Burttschell, C. E. Mahone. P. J. Miles and P. M. Civill were among those that balked on shipping. W. Dixon purchased Balcshcd for ,000 today from T. A. Gay. II. Harris secured Fashion from A. G. Weston mid shipped her this morning to Havana. The Highland Park Jockey Clubs executive committee sent a telegram here stating that they had reinstated Croxton, Vagabond and Deerslayer. The first two named died last week. The filly Aim, which was recently purchased from Li. A. Cells, has also died. The three dead horses were handled by "Spoony" Ellison. Jockey Notter carried off the riding honors by piloting four winners. He will depart after the running of the City Park Derby for Washington. to be on hand for the opening of the meetiug there. He has been engaged to ride Chapultepec in both Derbys here. The executive committee of the Crescent City Jockey Club will hold a meeting tomorrow morning and decide on the advisability of discontinuing the present system of betting and returning to the old Ktyle of booths and big slates.
