Miller Rides Three Favorites to Victory and Wins Applause — Dorados Great Race— Clear Weather and Good Card Attract Over 10,000 People. Oakland. Cal.. March 7. — The Undine Stakes, at a half-mile, for two-year-old colts and geldings, named alter the former nom -de course of Thomas H. Williams, was the big feature of todays attractive card at Oakland. It developed into a spectacular and truly run contest, in which probably the best horse, Duke of Milan, considering the inexperienced jockey that rode him. won. The Macdonough colts trainer, Harry Mason, has all along maintained that the Dukes races- at Santa Anita were not true tests of his merit and todays result confirms the high estimate he and other experts formed of Ormondes big grandson. Jockey Post filled the bill satisfactorily by simply retaining his seat in the saddle while the Orsinl — Spinach youngster did the rest. The field was composed of ten of the best two-year-olds on the Pacific coast. Including the crack Lee Rose and the pick of the Macdonongli. Williams. Keene and Schreiber collections of juveniles. Dwyers start in the stake made partial amends for his poor work with the barrier elsewhere. He left two horses at the post during the afternoon, one of which,- Dorado, won after one of the most thrilling uphill struggles ever witnessed on the local track. Walter Miller, who was the hero of this remarkable ride, was greeted with tumultuous applause by the 10,000 spectators present on his return to the scales. The tabulated history of the Undine Stakes is as follows: Yt ar. Winner. Wt. Jockey. Val. Time. ■MM Murphy 103 F. Carr . . .$ 760 1:19* MM Stake discontinued until 1906. MM Horace E IDs W. Gilberts effort on Tavora, which was also all but left at the start of the other chief feature, the Golden Gate Handicap, was scarcely less brilliant than that of Miller, only he fell short by a few inches of scoring a victory. Miller scored with every one of the three favorites that were successful, and greatly distinguished himself on all of them. The weather was ideal and a big half-holiday crowd was present and enjoyed high-class sport. Forty bookmakers plied their vocation in the big ring. J. J. Walsh will immediately ship eight or nine of his best horses from Santa Anita to the Oakland track. R. L. Thomas is waiting for good weather and track at the local course before shipping his string here. Red Leaf and Byronerdale both worked on an extra half after the finish of the third race. Barney Schreiber has shipped four of his mares at Oakland to the Winters Stock Farm at Reno. Nev., where they will be bred to the stallion El Rio Rey. The mares were Orlina, Sainperia, Grace Van S. and Contestrix.
