MEELICK TAKES THE LOS ANGELES DERBY. Winner of California Derby at Oakland First in a Canter — Carman Breaks with Blute. I/os Angeles, Cal., March 7. — The Los Angeles Derby was won by Meelick in a featureless contest. Stanley Fay, which easily defeated Meelick in the Derby trial some few days ago, was no match for the Hildreth representative today. Meelick simply played with his opponent, took the lead at barrier rise and was never fully extended, lie won all tli way. coming through the stretch in a canter. The victory was not popular, the winner being greeted with only a slight ripple of applause. A beautiful floral horseshoe was placed around his neck. It. F. Carman and James Blute have parted com pany. Carman thought Magazin • should have beaten Meelick and Iterated Blute after the race. Blute r seuted the censure and plainly told Carman ii could get another trainer and the latter said he would. W. D. Millard won out Merrill when the gelding won the fifth race in a head finish with Wistaria. He backed his new acquisition and had a handsome profit over the purchase pric ■ of the horse. Lloyd rode his second winning mount when Boogcr Ked outstayed Oivagua in the sixth race. The race was at all times an issue between the two after Barbette retired. Silverskin won the closing race in a canter and incidentally gave jockey Shriner Ills second successful mount of the afternoon. Gateway was made the medium of an attempted coup, but was not good enough to Iteat the winn r today. Kuliinon ran in close attendance on the pacemaker to the stretch, where he tame away with a lush.
