■ — ■ BIG BOW TAKES MONTEREY DEFEATS MISS RILLIE AT TWO MILES IN AN EXCITING FINISH. The Mist Prevails Over a Band of Fast Sprinters-Stanley Fay Injured and Out of Training — Miller Hurt in His Fall. » Oakland, Cal., March 11. — A splendid card, which included two valuable features, was decided at Oakland today. Outsiders monopolized the racing honors, the exceptions being Salvage in the first aud Big Bow in the fourth. The last-named redoubtable four-miler achieved a brilliant victory in the race, the Monterey Selling Stakes, at two miles, from eight others, including such tried stayers as Miss Rillie. Red Leaf and Byrouerdale. The actual running proved spectacular, and the wind-up was of the thrilling kind. The race was truly run, with the entire field in close order for one mile and three-quarters, after which Big Bow and Miss Rillie drew out and fought it out stride for stride to the finish, with the unsexed Texas-bred son of Le Premier and Bess Owen proving the gamer of the two. He was worked an extra mile as a final preparation for next Saturdays Thornton Stakes, at four miles, and, barring - accidents, will probably win that famous test for stayers. Nine of the best sprinters in training were engaged in the secondary feature, the Niles Handicap over the Futurity course. The Mist, which had receded steadily in the betting, due to the presence in the saddle of the novice rider, J. Butler, got up and passed the tiring pacemakers in a sensational stretch sprint. Ideal weather conditions prevailed, and fully 8,000 spectators enjoyed a remarkable days sport. Jockey Butler was fined 0 for beating Senator Warner over the head while at the poet in the fifth race. E. Dealy has l ought the riding contract on apprentice Jarvis from J. MeNames. W. Walker arrived yesterday from Arcadia with Stanley Fay and Wallhausers horse. Livius, a candidate for the Thornton Stakes. Stanley Fay burst his Cool in the running of the Los Angeles Derby and will be thrown out of training forthwith. Walker intends to try for eastern stakes with his good three-year old late in the summer. Walter Miller is suffering from a strained back, the result of his fall yesterday, and did not ride today. Gilbert will have mounts on the following horses tomorrow: Cull Holland, Monvina, Import, Be Thankful aud May L. N. Knapp rides Captain John in the two-year-old race.
