HNKOLAS BRILLIANT TRIAL GIVES MUCH WEIGHT TO FAST OLDER HOESES AND BREAKS TRACK RECORD. Xing s Daughter Runs to Her True Form — Anne McGee Defeats Arionette— Ed Kane in Front — The Thorn Wins for New Owner. New Orleans, La.. March 11. — W. H. Fizers Iinkola qualified handsomely and looms up as the most dangerous candidate lor Derby honors next Saturday by his performance iu todays feature race, running the distance in 1:43, reducing the track record, conceding much weight to a band of good older horses and winning with plenty in reserve. There were many shrewd horsemen who thought Fizer was asking the colt the impossible when he sent him to the i ost and they predicted certain defeat for him. These same horsemen were loud in their praises and proclaimed Iinkola. after his performance, the best colt seen in these parts and in their estimation it is only a question of showing ability to carry his 114 pounds to gain the decision in the Derby. Iinkolas victory was a popular one and his return to the scales was signalized by an ovation. It is barely possible that he will supplant Chapultepec in favoritism. Should it rain and the track become muddy for the race, it is certain he will be the favorite. Todays card was a good one and resulted in fine sport; favorites and second choices carried off all the purses excepting the one won I .- Ed Kane, another Fizer representative. Finishes were close in most of the races. The finish in the fifth race between Rexane, Teo Beach and Ionvolo was a hard f-tiuggle. lasting through the entire stretch, Rexane winning in the last few strides. T. C. McDowells Kings Daughter showed a return to good form by winning the third race from Escutcheon in the fastest time the distance has be n run here this season. The defeat of Arionette in the opening race was a stunner and was brought about by Koerners action in cutting across with Anne McG«e and almost tin-owing the Delia filly. Anne McGee, after the mishap went into a long lead and lasted long,-enough to win by a head from Arionette. Wausau. tracked strongly by the smart specula tors, landed the second race in commanding style from Prowler, with the favorite, Canada, third. The start was delayed for some time by the runaway of Mr. Jack. He got the better of jwekey S. Flynn after lining up at the barrier and ran away three miles. The closing race went to The Thorn, recently aequired by P. Dunne. Notter gave him a masterful ride and had slight difficulty in getting him to the finish in advance of Miss Mazzoni. Notters other winning mounts were Kings Daughter and Wausau. William Oft has shipped thirteen, and W. H. Fizer three horses to Nashville, where they will I be turned out. Jockey C. Henry was suspended for one week by the judges for cutting across in front st on after the , btart iu the closing race while astride Whisk Broom. The former track record for one mile and seventy yards at the Fair Grounds was 1:43s, held by Beau Brummel. In running the distance in 1:43, Iinkola came within two-fifths of a second of the , American record, held jointly by Jimiuez and Dal-vay. made at Harlem, Chicago. Pinkola was sent on a mile and a furlong in todays race, covering ; the distance in 1:52.
