OFF DAY AT NEW ORLEANS MEDIUM CLASS HORSES FURNISH THE RACING, BUT FINISHES ARE SPIRITED. Al Muller Defeats Colloquy and Jacobite in a Fast Sprint — Hooray Inflicts a Surprise on Admirers of Green Seal — Meelick Arrives Safely. Now Orleans. La.. March 12. — Todays card was a typical off-day one. and resulted in many upsets «nd profit to the sharp element, which backed many good things with extraordinary confidence. The principal upset came with the runningtof the sixth race, won hy Hooray in a sliarj drive from Donna. Green Seal, which easily defeated Juggler in his last start, was thought to have the purse «t his mercy, and was given strong support, but after showing much speed for three-quarters he tired and had to be hard ridden to last it out long enough to save third place. In the handicap at six furlongs another upset «ame in the defeat of Jacobite, which could do no Totter than land third to .y Muller and Colloquy. His poor showing caused the judges to ask jockey Notter for an explanation, and he reported that the horse lacked speed and when he discovered the futility of punishing it in an effort to wear down the leaders, he quit riding hard. The closing race went to Goldway in rather handy style. He was lucky in escaping the interference in front of the stand that caused Elaine, Belleview and June Time to fall. Ottoman, although suffering from niuclj interference, went well and took second place. Belleview, after falling, took after his opponents and, passing them one by one, came to the finish a half-dozen lengths in advance of Goldway. Intervene, under a bustling ride, proved the best of an average baud of youngsters in the opening race. «M«rt»« Javotte and Bess Ward, the latter favorite, fought it out in the second race, Javotte winning handily. Ben Trovato was made the medium of a betting coup in the third race, and won out after a spirited drive with Allonby. •Spion had to be much the best in the fifth race to win with Mulcahy in the saddle. Royal Ben. which finished second, was the good thing, but ran as if a trifle short. Jockeys Liebert and Rosen were each suspended for five days by the starter for disobedience at the post. The judges fined jockey Schaller 5 for striking jockey Notter. The riders came to blows in the Mcale room as a result of Notter having shut off Scballers. mount. Jockeys Huestis and Mulcahy were also lined a small amount for engaging in a fight. S. C. Hildreths Meelick, winner of both California I evbys. arrived late tonight and was taken to the Fair Grounds where quarters have been pro-pared for him. It was stated that he bad shipped well. but. there is an uncertainty about him starting in the Cn-scent City Derby. Reports have it that Hildreth had been misinformed regarding Chapul-tepecs condition and Hildreth figured that with the Burlew crack out of the way, it seemed reasonably certain that Meelick would win. It is, however, expected that with the horse on the ground, his owner will send him to the post. Chapultepec had his fiual tryout this morning, Burlew being content to only send him a preliminary mile which he negotiated in l:40g with his full weight up. The general opinion is that he is iu the best possible fettle. The same exr»ert opinion inclines to Pinkola to beat Meelick. Miss Mazzoni, which finished second in the closing race Wednesday, was claimed by "Counselor Bill" Brien for 25.
