DERBY DECISION AT HAND. FOUR CRACK THREE-YEAR-OLDS NAMED TO START IN THE BIG RACE. New Orleans Derby Mad and a Great Crush Is Looked For — Chapultepec and Angelus, Coupled, Greatly Favored. New Orleans, La., March 13. — The running of tomorrows Derby and its probable outcome are the chief topics among horsemen and race-followers tonight. Never before has the same interest attached to the running of any l erl y in this section. It is admitted that, except in MM case of Montgomery, the quartette of three-year-olds carded to start tomorrow by far outclasses any former contestants in the same event. The splendid condition in which Meelick arrived after his long trip has earned for him a large following, but the critics still contend that he will lie the trailer In tomorrows race. Advance speculation tonight is heavy, with the Burlew and ONeill pair prevailing at 4 to 5. Fred Bnrlew early in the day bet bookmaker Fontelieu ,500 at evens, and shortly thereafter Tom Shaw made the same bookmaker a wager of .5o at 4 to B. Trainer Fizer has not lost confidence in his candidate and a Vers that Pinkola will be an easy winner. lie maintains that Pinkola can carry his weight, despite rumors to the contrary, and iioints to the fact that the colt in his last eight starts has done everything asked of him. Meelick was given a pipe-opener this morning, Dngan haying the leg up. Trainer Dave Leary, who has him in charge, sent him a mile in 1:408. The colt was fighting hard for his head and left the track bucking and playing. Most of the owners «hlnk that Chapultepec will be an easy winner, and Iinkola the most serious factor of the others. The starters, jockeys and probable betting follow: •Chapultepec K. McDaniel 7-10 •Angelus Xotter 7-10 Pinkola Minderi 3-1 Meelick K. Dngan 7-2 •Burlew and ONeill entry. Willi good weather it is expected that an attendance exceeding all previous gatherings at the local track wilt be on hand to cheer the winner. Rig fields and rough riding marred todays racing to a considerable extent and were responsible for several riders going down. Truemau, who fell in the second race with Contanna, sustained injuries that will keep hitn out of the saddle for many months. In addition to breaking his left arm he whs bruised considerably about the head and body. That other riders in the same race did not fall was a miracle, as Contanna, Truernans mount, was up with the leaders at the time she fell, but, luckily, they avoided her. The mishap enabled Prowler to win by a slight margin over Canada. The feature race went to Folly Prim, -which, running to her l est. form, lieat Kercheval, last years Burns Handicap winner. He was making his first start for a long time, but his connections felt sanguine of his success and backed him confidently. In the opening race Little Mose was made the favorite and, after a strenuous stretch drive, beat Columbus, one of the outsiders. Momentum and Big Ben indulged in a roughing contest during the last furlong of the third race and Momentum, standing the usage better, won in the last stride. Banrida was lucky in escaping the interference that came with the running of the fifth race and won by a big margin. Queen Souvenir, on which Brussel bad the mount, was caught in a jam soon after the start and was thrown, but both escaped with a slight shaking up. After Pickens, on No Quarter, had knocked the most probable contenders out of the sixth race by cutting across in front at the start, Hannibal Bey and Robin Hood were left to, fight it out for the purse, the former winning. J. McCahey, on Viperine, almost caused a disaster in the closing race by pulling in close to the rail while rounding the first turn. It enabled him to go into a long lead which he retained to the stretch turn, where he was passed by Flaxman, which won, Viperine beating Creel for second place For Tough riding and causing Queens Souvenir to fall in the fifth race, jockey .1. Howard, who had the mount on Hostile Hyphen, was suspended for two weeks by the judges. The officials were unable to determine who was responsible for the crowding in the second race which caused Contanna to fall. Jockey Minder was suspended for five days by the starter for disobedience at the post. A. B. Hade, who will succeed Mars Cassidy ok Marter at City PaTk, arrived today. .1. H. Mc V«rmick disposed of Animus after bis race today for ,000 to Albert Simons.
