NOTES OF THE TURF. The Hamilton Derby last year received twenty entries, while the number this year reaches forty-live and similar increase is reported of thv other stakes to be run during the spring meeting. Trance, H. T. Griffins two-year-old bay filly by Ben Brush — Fair Vision, fell lame in her preparation for the Woodlands Stakes and her owner fears be will be forced to throw her out of training. R. F. Carman says he will ship a carload of his horses to New York next week, where he has stable room reserved for them at Belmont Park. This will be the first shipment east from Santa Anita this spring. F. R. Hitchcock has returned from his short visit to England and the continent. He says . Thomas Hitchcock, Jr. will remain abroad another month and may buy some steeplechasers to bring back with him. Frank J. Farrell has named his two-year-old chestnut colt by Woolsfhorpe — Pink Rose, Sheriff Foley. Four names which Farrell filed with the Jockey-Club for two-year-olds wore rejected for the reason that they had already been claimed. Superintendent Frank Clarke of the Sheepshead Bay track has been presented with a brass cannon which stands nearly six feet high and Is several hundred years old. It has done service In a number of the Philippine Island insurrections against the Spanish and Mr. Clarke will have it mounted and placed near the front entrance to the track.
