FOUR-MILERS AT OAKLAND. THE THORNTON STAKES THE CENTER OF ATTRACTION THIS AFTERNOON. President Williams Buys Big Bow and the Horse Will Start in His Colors with Butwell Up — Miller Goes South. 0 Oakland, Cal., March 13.--Thomas H. Williams paid ,000 for Big Bow today, and the sturdy four-miler will carry the famous black jacket and yellow cap of the president of the New California Jockey Club in tomorrows long-distance event, the Thornton Stakes. Walter Miller, the chief stable jockey, will not ride the new acquisition, however, on account of a prior engagement on one of "Lucky" Baldwins candidates in the Colin Stakes, decided at Santa Anita the same day. The unfashionable Butwell, who had been promised the mount by Big Bows former owner. G. W. Scott, will not be deprived of the honor. Mr. Williams has also secured an option on the crack sprinter, Gemmell, since the deal for the transfer of the horse to Charles-T. Henshall fell through. The present mid-weeks run of successful favorites at Oakland continued today, and the great gathering of race-goers attracted to the course by the fine card and exquisite weather, profited greatly thereby. Bannock Bob. at I to 2, Taunt, at 2 to I and Fantastic at ! to 5, were the outstanding winning public choices. The three utar riders, Gilbert, Miller and Knapp, achieved brilliant victories on respectively Bannock Bob, St. Avon and Taunt, all of which owed their successes to good horsemanship. Dave Henry, the local trainer for Barney Schrei-ber, will leave here tomorrow for the farm at Woodlands for the purpose of getting together a stable of thirty two-year-olds which will be campaigned in the middle west during the summer. Clifford lilliert will ride the following horses tomorrow: Tawasentha, Massa, Livius, Ray and The Mist. ____
