KENTUCKY HORSES THRIVING GREATLY. Lexington, Ky., March 16. — The general health of the horses at the breeding farms and likewise the local race track is excellent; so much so that the veterinarians are doing little more than nothing. Attending mares in foaling is the extent of their occupation just now. The breeders and trainers, of course, are iu a happy frame of mind over this rather unusual condition, for at this season in previous years they have had to go down deep into their pockets to settle the bills of the "vets." "Why. 1 havent had a veterinary on the farm in three months." said Superintendent Ed Kane of Vugust Belmonts Nursery Stud, as he smiled in expression of his satisfaction. "It has been a flue winter lor Ihe mares and since there is now little prospect of really severe weather we should enter the spring and go through the summer without an epidemic of any sort. All of my neighbors report the same phasing conditions." "I have been down here nearly ten years." said Superintendent Charles McCracken of the Millstream Stud, which belongs to the firm of Miller, Bishop A Painter, "and 1 have not known a more open winter nor seen horses freer from sickness." "There has been no sickness at all at mv farm this winter." said Edward Corrigan after he had ridden over the place with Superintendent Pat Gil-f -vie last Wednesday. "In addition to the saving for medicine and services of a veterinary, the open winter has had another economical angle. We have had to feed very little grain. The mares have had plenty of grass and this, with a daily allowance of hay. has sufficed to keep them fat and In excellent ■aaaa. My mares look much better than when they have gone through a severe winter and been fed on grain. There has not been as much slipping at my place this season as in tin- past. I think five or six is the number of foals I have lost that Way and none at all after they were born. To date there are ten foals at my place."
