GEMMEU MAKES A RECORD. DEFEATS SUGARMAID, R0ALT0 AND CADICH0N IN A GREAT FINISH. Ormuz Wins from Pajaroita in a Fast Three-Quar« ters — Mozart Takes the Race for Two- Year-Olds — Jack Adams in First. Oakland. Cal.. March lf . — Gemmell established a new track record of 1:2." J at Oakland today by winning the racing feature from Sugarmaid. Roalt.i and Cadicbon. The Rubicon gelding, held at odds on in the betting, received a bad start, but after a very patieuji and well-judged ride by W. Kelly. got up to win right at the end of a very thrilling race. Miller on Roalta beat the others away by a half-dozen lengths, but did uot make the most of his tremendous advantage, which enabled his competitors to rapidly close the gap in the early running, and afterwards the quartette hung together right to the end. Gemmell and Jack Adams were favorites which made good for their backers during the afternoon. The discriminating public did not fare badly over the victories of the outsiders, second and third choices — : Monvina. Mozart. Wuerzburger and Ormuz — which one and all showed marked superiority in their respective races and i-ouhl have be n the preferred ones in the ring on past performances. The majority of backers would have none of Sir Brillar. Cull Holland, Alsatian. Confederate and Pajaroita. favorites of the ring made variety, and consequently had a gooji day. Neither Miller nor Gilbert scored today. The last-named failed to finish iu the first three and the champions In-st was three thirds. The daily cards show marked improvement in class and attractiveness and the attendance and interest in the sport continue unabated. More than T.Ooo gathered at the track to enjoy todays racing and thirty-six layers handled the ring business.- A ,000 handicap each day will probably be programmed after this w ek. Secretary Percy W. Treat has received word by wire to the effect that "Lucky" Baldwin intends to ship a pair of two-year-olds, including Del Cru-zados.. to run in the Bell Stakes next Saturday. Gilbert will have the mounts on Bannock Bob, Lula G., Preen, Import, I Told You and Como tomorrow.
