PROSPECTORS DERBY CHANCE VANISHES. That Prospector "has become a pronounced roarer," as announced on the authority of Sir Charles Nugent, is ind-cd unfortunate for the colts owner. Mr. D. Browning, but that his wind was supposed to be affected- -an aftermath of his severe attack of ever last summer — had for some time past boon whispered, hence my writing of him. when I had occasion to mention him iu connection witli th" Derby, as possessed of a good chant* ■ pro- ided he had completely shaken on" the effects of his illness, says •Vigilant" in London Sportsman. His malady having entered upon the "pronounced" stage, it would seem that his prospects of carrying off the Blue Riband are now remote, for even that brilliant roarer, Prince Charlie, was nimble to stay the mile and a half at Epsom. Such was the confidence inspired by his Two Thousand Guineas victory, which lie gained by a neck from Cremorne. that the "Prince" start. d a warm favorite for the Derby, but was not in the first four, Creuiorne. Pell Mell, Queens Messenger and Wenlock being the quart ft- officially placed by the judge. It is true that Prince Charlie subsequently ran second over a mile and three-quarters in the St. Leger, but the first thr.e in the Derby were not in the field at Doncaster. and Wenlock again beat the roaring sun of Blair Athol. scoring very easily by five lengths. Charibert was another Two Thousand winner that "made a noise" of some sort, even if not actually a roar-r. and he, too. failed to distinguish himself in the Derby, running nowhere to , Sir Bevys Palmbearer and Visconti. although over the Rowley Mile, the last-named had been nnahl ■ to get within hail of the late Lord Falmouths colt. Writing from memory the nearest an actual roarer lias got to winning the Derby was when Couronne , de M tallied Lord Rosebcrys colors into second | hoe liehind George Frederick.
