MERLING0 WINS THE LONG DISTANCE RACE, Botanist Proves Best in the Handicap— Many Horses Changs Ownership— Closing Notice Posted. Los Angeles, Cal.. March 24. — Botanist, somewhat neglected in the betting, proved an easy winner in the most pretentious race of the afternoon, showing his heels to his opponents throughout. Mary F. was selected by the talent as a sure winner and made a decided favorite, but had all she could do to sa%e second place from Lisaro. Merlingo. w 11 backed by a shrewd crowd, proved an easy winner in the long-distance race, setting his own pace throughont and made his opponents look cheap. After a meeting of the board of directors held this morning, general manager Gardner posted notices stating that the meeting will positively close Saturday. April 4. Frank Regan will ship his horses east next Sunday with K. Peters and John Shields. Other horsemen who contemplate leaving within the next few days with their horses are M. L. Hav-man, H. M. Mason, John Boden, T. M. Cassidy and K. L. Talby. J. J. Walsh expects to ship all of the horses he now owns to Oakland next week, and after the close of the season there will probably ship to Seattle instead of racing on the Canadian circuit. Walsh says he might ship east late in the summer. W. T. Anderson has announced that he will ship his horses to Denver after the close of racing here and rest up at Overland Iark for the meeting there. Trainer H. S. Newman was at the track today for the first time since he was injured in an automobile accident a week ago last Sundav. McDowell; Little Buck. 00, G. Hutton; Godfather, 50, J. Pelter: Otwell. 0. T. B Owen: My Lady Fair. 0. T. B. Owen; Bell of Brass. 75. K. Wright: Volga. 0. M. Wilson; Brooms Kdge. 5. H. Whitman; Martha Jefferson, 0, J. Munday: Chippewa. 00, S. A. Clopton. The weather was balmy and the attendance large. The twenty books did a big days business, breaking about even in the speculation.
