FIFTH IN THE AMERICAN STALLION LIST. Ben Strome. the brown horse by Bend Or — Strath-fleet, which ranked fifth in the list of leading American sires of M07 and whose progeny in IMS showed a greater amount of earnings on the American turf than those of any other sire, was not particularly famed as a racer. His contests both in Kngland and this country, while clowned with few successes, showed him poss ssed of qualities indicating that good blood coursed through his cins and the record of his sons aud daughters wherever found exemplified this well. In tflH he raced as a two-year-old under the colors of the Duke of Westminster in the Middle Park Plate at Newmarket, but was no", among th" winners until the following year when he captured a plat of 150 sovereigns for all ages at York. The same year he won a maiden plate at Leicester, lb-was second in the St. James Palace Stakes at Ascot and third in the Triennial Stak-s at the same course. In MM be i-an in twelve race*, in nine of whi.-h be was entered under the name of Mr. G. Haughton. who then became .his owner. He was second in three, third in three and unplaced in the remainder. In MM he was heard from in ten races, all in Kngland. finishing second in two and third in two. The following year found him in America, where be started in six races, being unplaced in all. Soon after he was retired to the stud and how good an account he gave of himself is best r corded in "the performances of bis splendid offspring. Among these Kos«ben stands well in the bad. this great sprinter having to his credit MS, MS in winnings during 1907. Ben Ban. another good horse, had 1,075 for the same period and I.en Fleet, the two-vear-old brother to Highball, which died last year, stands third in th ■ list with .7 ;s to his credit. Big Ben. Burleigh. Fireball and Pasadena are others which have given gi od account of themselves.
