MONTREAL MEETING CLOSES REMARKABLE ATTENDANCE KEEPS UP AND A GREAT THRONG VIEWS THE RACING Goes Fast Defeats Clell Xurney Jn the Champlain Stakes Cloisteress Runs a Fast ThrceQuarters Montreal Que September 12 The greatest meet ¬ ing ever held over the Blue Bonnets course of the Montreal Jockey Club came to a close today beforo a crowd that taxed the capacity of the plant Stand ¬ ing room in the grand stand was at a premium and the immense overflow made themselves as comforta ¬ ble as possible on the spacious lawns Society wan out Jn force among those present being His Excel ¬ lency Earl Grey who made a twodays trip from the northwest to be present The program simply sparkled with features be ¬ sides the Champlain Stakes there being offered as attractions a twoyearold handicap at six furlongs a long distance race in which the field was asked to go a mile and a half a steeplechase over the short course and a race which called for the starters to bo owned by residents of the Province of Quebec The racing conditions could not have been improved upon and three new track records were established dinring the afternoon one at six furlongs when Cloisteress ran the distance in 1123 another at one mife which Goes Fast ran in 138 j and still another wluii Waterway won the short course steeplechase In c34JIn c34J In the Champlajn Stakes Goes Fast came from be ¬ hind in the stretch and just managed to get up in time to beat Clell Turney out by a head Clell Tur ney although defeated ran the best race of his ca ¬ reer set a terrific pace nearly all the way and only succumbed iu the last hundred yards yardsMany Many of the stables racing here whose owners desired to race at Toronto will be forced to ship to other points on account of the lack of stable room at Woodbine Some of the horsemen left tonight for the Toronto track among them the big string of James McLaughlin IJoger Mintons horses also left on the same train trainJ J C Ferriss Jr of Nashville Tenn has pre ¬ sented to John F Byan of the National Breeding Bureau the Bend Or stallion Mcllvain This horse stands 101 and weighs about 1150 pounds He is in superb condition and will be shipped to Colonel McLaughlin the bureaus representative at Medi ¬ cine Hat During his career on the turf Mcilvalu was a frequent winner and he finished second in the Canadian Derby which was won by John Dyments great threeyearold Fort Hunter Jockey HunterJockey J Howard has signed to ride for Amoa Turney during the Woodbine meeting and will leave with the stable for Toronto on Monday Jockey MondayJockey Masnada who had the mount on Bally castle which fell in todays steeplechase besides being boneThe bruised up suffered a broken collar bone The veteran turfman Charles Beed accompanied by several friends was a visitor at Blue Bonnets this afternoon afternoonPrevious Previous to the races a sale of race horses in training was held in the paddock Many of those offered were bought in Those sold were Red Mimic to J Cheney 400 Melton Cloth to J Cheney 275 Colored Lady to Colin Campbell 183 Copper Princess to J McBride 110 Water Lock to Colin Campbell 130 Shirley It to J Cbusin eau 117 Lady Leota to J A Daussat 85 85P P T Chinii has leased the running qualities of the chestnut horse John Carroll from Edward Cor
