THE MAGNIFICENT BIG TRAINS FEATS Whether Uosebcn is patched up anil runs again IT whether he goes Into well earned retirement from the track nothing cuu rob him of the fame of hav ¬ ing been the greatest sprinter and weight carrier of American turf history Others Kingston Voter Bendorau Lady Amelia Dr Hasbrouck and Ham ¬ burg Belle showed speed of the highest order but Hoseben excelled them all When in his prime his speed was unsurpassable and his weight carrying capacity something Jo marvel at When with 147 pounds on his muscular back he ran threequarters iu 111 he did it so easily as to make it plain that he could probably have done better than 111 had there l een sulliciently inciting competition It was the same way when he ran seven furlongs at Belmont Park in the unprecedented time of 122 with 120 pounds up No horse of record in this country ever won so many times at threequarters in better than 113 But what weight will do In racing was curiously and convincingly illustrated In his case He was naturally the despair of the handicapper and weights were piled on him sufficient to crush a more than ordinary horse These he carried up to a point with such ease as to inculcate the idea that weight made no difference to Koseben But it did for 150 pounds or more always brought about his defeat Just a few pounds less than 150 pounds was his point With more than that he wis always in trouble in the company with which he was forced to compete Hoseben was a good friend to rash impulsive Davy Johnson and he can very well afford to send him into comfortable re ¬ tirement In all his record is Roseben b jr 1901 by Ben Strome Roseleaf Year Age Sts 1st 2d 3d Unp Won 1903 2 1 0 0 0 1 Totals C 94 45 20 11 IS 70495
