ENGLISH RACING NEWS AND GOSSIP Death of Trainer William Day The MahcrHiKBS Race Dates of Next Season London Eug September 1 The death occurred on Saturday August 29 of William Day the once famous trainer The deceased only a fortnight ago celebrated his eightyfifth birthday and was then the recipient of a great number of congratulations from sportsmen in all parts of the country countryTor Tor upward of a century the name of Day has always held a most prominent place In the affairs of the turf and mention of the veteran just de ¬ ceased recalls many stirring episodes of the palmy days of the sport He was contemporaneous with such exclusive aristocratic patrons of the turf as Lord George Bentinck the Duke of Grafton Lord Exeter Lord Jersey Colonel Anson Admiral Itous Lord Clifden Admiral Harcourt Sir J Hawley Lord Palmerston and Mr Merry Those were the days when the leading lights of the pigskin were Chappie Scott Sim Templemau Flatman Marlow J Mar son F Butler Aldcroft Wells Griuishaw French Maidment and the recently deceased Harry Cus iance ianceTwo Two of the greatest animals the deceased was first associated with were Crucilix trained by Days father Honest John as he was more familiarly called and Virago The lirstuanvd is credited with having won Lord George Beutluck no less a Bum than 5500000 and amongst the races which she won were the Two Thousand One Thousand and Oaks Virago achieved the great performance of winning the City and Suburban and Great Metro politau Stakes on the same afternoon It is inter ¬ esting to note that John Porter of Klngsclere re JIOWD was at that time a lad in the famous Dane ¬ bury establishment establishmentTo To very many of the present generation William Day was unknown indeed he had been almost for ¬ gotten by many who were his confreres more than forty years ago William Day was born as far back as August 0 1823 He rode Airy the winner of tue Brighton Stakes in 1S37 being then only fourteen years of age but it was in the year previ ¬ ous 1ST5G that he had his first winning mount That was at Stockbridge in the white scarlet sleeves and black cap of one Mr Sadler belonging to a Hampshire family whose name was almost as familiar to that county as that of the Days them ¬ selves Lord George Bentinck was in full sway at the period and Onr William as the deceased was often termed who could then go to scale at a few pounds above six stone rode most of the light ¬ weights for the Danebury Stable In 1S3S he steered Lord Georges Grey Momus the first and only grey horse to win the Ascot Cup Grey Momus that year ridden by John Day had won the Two Thousand Guineas and finished third to the famous Aniato and Ion for the Derby DerbyAt At the time of his death William Day was not only the oldest jockey but likewise the oldest trainer Perhaps by latterday racegoers he will be best remembered by his achievements with the American bred horse Foxhall which won the Grand Prix de Paris as well as the double event of the Cesare witch and Cambridgeshire in 1SS1 and in the fol ¬ lowing season carried off the Ascot Gold Cup But the late Mr William Day had achieved the dis ¬ tinction of training the winners of the two great autumn handicaps as far back as 1SGO In recent years the veteran had contributed freely to sport ¬ ing literature and several articles from his pen have at various times figured In print printMr Mr J II Keene on a visit to this country then patronized William Day and among the horses he sent him in Wiltshire was the famous Foxhall which revived memories of Mr Days already re ¬ corded double in the Cesarewitch and Cambridge shire Foxhall also won the Grand Prix de Paris and the Ascot Cup Subsequent to that horse how ¬ ever William Day had a few in training near Salisbury but he retired altogether about the be ¬ ginning of the nineties ninetiesThe The deceased left fonr sons Captain Day Dr Day of Twickenham William and Alfred the last mentioned being the present head of the Aruudel training establishment establishmentDeath Death has recently claimed several wellknown bookmakers and following on the demise of George CoojMr at Brighton John Nansen expired suddenly OH Saturday August 29 at Margate after an opera ¬ tion Deceased who was fiftyone years of age had not been in the best of health of late but was in the clubs as usual a few days ago agoLike Like the late George Cooper Nansen began at the very bottom of the ladder starting as a bookmaker outside at Harpenden and Kingsbury but gradually rose to be one of the best known men in Tattersalls and included and breeder Mr Walter Raphael He is a bay son of Flying Fox and tho Frenchbred Tagale bjr Le Saucy out of The Other Eye by Common and was foaled on February 21 1900 There is an interesting rumor current at New ¬ market to the effect that the great mare Pretty Polly may accompany Hammcrkop when he returns to Clarehaven to be trained again Pretty Polly was thought to be in foal to Spearmint Instances of horses that have done duty at the stud returning to racing are frequent recent examples being pro ¬ vided in Americns and Melayr but it is not often that mares are sent from the paddock to be trained again A few seasons back however W Elsey the Banmber trainer won quite a number of races with a mare called Xenie which had had a foal prior to resuming racing and at fourteen years of age this daughter of Xenophon won the Solway Plate at Carlisle subsequently again quitting the turf for the paddock and last year she had a twoyear old running called Galamene English racing is a
