FOG RACING AT HAMILTON. MIST-LADEN ATMOSPHERE OBSCURES VIEW OF RACERS EXCEPT IN THE HOMESTRETCH. Ethon Defeats King Cobalt and Sets a New Track Record Mollie Montroso Wins Her First Race of the Year. Hamilton, Ont., October 0. A majority of todays races at Hamilton were run in a dense fog in which the fields were hidden from view until well into the homestretch. This in itself lent an air of uncertainty to results, but most of the races furnished close finishes, so the chances are that there was contention pretty much all of the way. The special race train from Toronto was about thirty minutes late in arriving and this delayed calling horses to the post for the opening dash to 2:47. The program was a good one and had as attraction the Niagara Handicap, a steeplechase over the two miles and a quarter course and a race over .the grass track. Favorites won two of the races," the successful choicer lwing Sally Preston and Mollie Montrose. Tlo-oe of the beaten choices. Clell Tur-ney. Prince of IMlsen and King Cobalt, were at odds-on, so their defeat meant heavy losses to the biff operators. George C. Bennetts Tennessee-bred colt. Ethou. showed himself in high class form in the Niagara, the feature race of the afternoon, which he won iit the fast time of 1 :25J for the seven furlongs. Ethou carried 117 pounds, followed the fast pace closely, which King Cobalt made for live furlongs, moved up quickly when straightened for the stretch racing and, after a mild drive, got up and won going away. The time marks a new track record for the distance for the Hamilton track and oue that will not soon lie equaled. The defeat of Clell Turney in the opening dash was one of the biggest upsets of the afternoon. The Turney youngster appeared to outclass his opjio-nents, but his hard race at a mile and a half on Friday last evidently did the colt no good, for ho quit after going six furlongs today. Prince of Pilsen. the heavily backed favorite in the steeplechase, took a bad looking tumble at the fourteenth jump. He was "dickey" when going to the post and many of the horsemen expected him to break down during the running. R. F. Carman returned from New York this morning and will remain until the close of the meeting. His entire stable will be shipped from here to Los Angeles some day next week. Two of his string. Melton Cloth and Fleming, were scratched today, they having developed the skin disease which Is common here this year. Roger MInton ha.s arranged to shin his stable to Texas. Maurice Welsh will also send his string there, provided he can get together enough horsemen to make up another car. Jockey .7. W. Murphy and T. Rice also go from here to Texas. The report sent here from Toronto that the jumper Arian had been destroyed turned out to be a bit premature. The horse is in a bad way and his people have but little hope of ever getting him to the post again. An effort is being made, however, to save him for hunting purposes. After todays accident, in which he fell with Prince of Pilsen in the steeplechase, jockey McAfee decided to rest a few weeks, and he left for his home in Toronto tonight. The following owners ship from here to Baltimore, on Monday next: A. B. Stansbury. P. Gallagher. N. K. Beai, A. G. Weston. James Robinson. J. ". Pangle. V. P. Reed. T. G. Molinelli. W. Jennings. J. F. Smythe. J. Clay and J. W. Graver. Jockey Guy Burns will leave for Los Angeles with the. Carman stable at the conclusion of the present meeting. Most of the Canadian owners will go into winter quarters at the conclusion of the present meeting. The Valley Farm Stable goes from here to Woodbine Park. J. Dyment ships to his farm at Barrie anil William Shields will probably turn his horses out for the winter. The Seagram horses go from hero to their owners place at Waterloo.
