ROYAL TOURIST STAR OF THE SALE. New York. October G. Thirty-nine race horses in training from the stables of Harry Payne Whitney, nerman B. Duryea and J. L. McGinnis. together with one each the property of John Huggins and B. F. Muthray, were sold at auction in the big sales paddocks of the Fasig-Tiptou Co. at Sheeps-head Bay today. Numerically it was the biggest public sale of ready-made racers that has been held in this country in a decade. The sale was largely attended, among those present being II. P. Whitnev. A. J. Joyner, Mr. and Mrs. II. B. Duryea, J. II. McCorraick. J. J. Hvland. George Saportas. E. Whytc, W. A. McCully, W. Lakeland. G. B. Morris. F. E. Gardner. J. E. Madden. F. 1. Weir. C. It. Ellison. R. E. Watkins. E. C. Cowdin. W. Garth. J. L. McGinnis. H. K. Vingut, J. Pincus. F. Cook. James Rowe. Frank McCabe. T. Hitchcock. Jr., Francis Hitchcock, L. C. Appleby, besides hundreds of other men prominent on the American turf. The Whitney batch of twenty-one brought in the aggregate the sum of 1,250. The Duryea lot of thirteen sold for ,325 and J. L. McGinnis four fetched S750. The opinion prevailed generally that the sale was a very successful one and that every horse sold, with one or two possible exceptions, brought all he was worth. Bar None, sound, would have been the star of the sale, but on account of lameness the big Nasturtium three-year-old was not even shown. Competition was keener for Royal Tourist than for any other horse offered and he was knocked down to C. R. Ellison for .,100. F. D. Weir was the principal contending bidder.
